i think i agree with charles on this one though i'll abstain from the homoerotic side of the discussion. i don't agree with the idea that illegal workers don't hurt anyone.

now, sifting through this guy's "diary" the crux of his argument does have some validity; that being that they're stuck in prison unable to collect wages so they can go home while their employers get off scott-free or take proft. some basic human needs aren't being met but the place doesn't sound like the dark ages or a japanese prison.

true, he's not some rapist murdering thug but he broke the law and he knows it. the guy also seems to have a very big screw loose. an immigration official has the right to see your passport, if not under regular circumstances, then certainly after you've admitted to being in the country illegally. not sure exactly what he was hoping to accomplish. as for "legal counsel", what for? he was there illegally, knows it, admitted to it, so yeah, he should get the boot. i wish canada had more balls when it came to deporting illegals (and keeping them from coming back).

I think we should just lock up all English teachers over the age of 30. They are obviously not trying very hard at bettering themselves. :P

Hell, I didn't even start teaching 'til after I was 30. It's a chilled out gig with lots of free time, I can dress however I like for work and get 7 weeks paid vacation a year.

What's not to like about teaching English? :D

Hell, I didn't even start teaching 'til after I was 30. It's a chilled out gig with lots of free time, I can dress however I like for work and get 7 weeks paid vacation a year.

What's not to like about teaching English? :D


I know, I was just kidding. I was teaching Jr HS this time last year. Loved the job and the free time, I just couldn't cope living on sub 300,000 a month wages..

Unless you have your own school of course, or have one of super-rare jobs that pays very well.

Most of my English Teacher mates use the free time to suppliment their income with free lance work in other fields, eg training, IT, design, whatever.

Keeps the brain working in something other than teaching and lets them have more disposable income to play more or travel more.

But then most of my friends are very dynamic and "get-up-and-go" types. :lol:

Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

It really depends on how much they make in their freelance work... When I taught I did that too, but it still wasn't fantastic money overall.

Now I work full time in IT...And I might possibly (perhaps) do some consulting on the side... Maybe. ;)

It is also more to do with keeping the brain going. My friends who do this see teaching as a way of paying the bills while giving them the freedom to explore some less stable but more satisfying and creative pursuits - eg freelance design... Most of them move out of teaching after they have gained enough experience and clients to go out on their own. gomichild is a prime example of this. She is certainly not the sort to let barnacles grow under her feet..

But each to their own..

Yep, Japan is a place of huge opportunity -- if the person involved has the motivation to work and the balls (metaphorically speaking of course ;)) to take a bit of risk. It's one of the things I love about living here.
