When I lived in Japan. Not being able to pump your own gas. That was my biggest beef.
A few years ago I was in Oregon not knowing their Japanese style gas pumping laws and went off on the pump kid.

I didn't know you actually lived here! Was that during your Mormon mission? Just kidding. Did you hear that Ledbetter is out for the season?

What I like about this kind of thread

Postby canman » Sat Jul 23, 2005 2:39 pm

I don't know why, but I enjoy seeing how other gaijin feel about certain things. Sure I can complain to my wife about the lack of good sausages, and she can listen intently, but in the end she is Japanese and doesn't know any different. But here mostly everyone is from a western country and I think we all have a lot in common. So by my complaining about sausages(which is a rather petty thing if you come to think of it), its just like your friends or family back home being able to bitch and complain about the things they don't like. Its just that at home everyone can understand them as they are in the same position. But for a lot of us we don't have others who understand our silly rantings and ravings. I don't think it has anything to do with anti-Japanese feelings, hell everyone loves to complain. I call up my Mom and Dad and within a few minutes they are on about the gov't or the weather or the price of gas. Anyway keep them coming I love to hear them.

Damnit... sausages. I made my own Italian sausage earlier this year from scratch because it was just easier that way, same goes with bread, and an experiment with some hobo wine... and pizza for that matter.

Anytime I call home, the parents are just telling me what wonderful thing they are going to eat or have eaten... last night was ribs and fillet mignon :(

tired of being treated like a fool

Lets backtrack for a second.

8 July 2005: Arranged on the 7th July, I was due to work at 1pm. My boss phones me later the same day (7th) and tells me "I cant tomorrow, I got something." At least he told me a good way in advance the first time.

12 July 2005: Arranged on the 5th July, I was due to work at 2pm. My boss sends an email to my phone at 11am, saying "I cant today, I got something." But, I never recieved the email il about 3pm. Obviously, I turned up at work, unknowingly. He asked me what I was doing there. The something he had which made him unavailable to work? His son was ill. Not seriously ill. Depressed as my friend has just left, and because I cancelled a private students lesson, whom I enjoy teaching alot and was sad to cancel. I leave work very low.

15 July 2005: Arranged on 12th July, I was due to work at 1pm. My boss sends an email to my phone at 11:30 saying "I cant today, I got something." I was at my local station, waiting for the train to work at the time.

17 July 2005: Arranged on 12th July, I was due to work at 1pm. Amazingly, everything went to plan and I worked for 2 hours, telling my boss I had to leave at 3pm to go to Church.

24 July 2005: Arranged a week ago, I was due to work at 2pm. My boss phones at 10.30am to let me know that "I cant today, I got something."

I am ULTRA ANGRY not only because this is the 4th time, but also because I cancelled meeting my friend because I had to work. I could have seen her. I shouldnt have cancelled, but my boss seemed 100% certain that he wasnt going to let me down this time. Im also angry as this is the day that I was planning on telling my boss "Im leaving." Now I cant. I have to wait til Wednesday. I just want to tell him now to get it over and done with.

...Or.....?? He has shown me ZERO respect. Why cant I let him know Im leaving by phone?

...Because he owes me my wages and more, thats why.

If you have any queries about why I am leaving Japan in September, meet my boss.

Then you'll have to share the recipe :D

ichigo - yes that Mainland cheese is not too bad, and it comes in nice BIG blocks - I'll be keping an eye peeled for it in the local supa.

Good sausage is damn near impossible out in the sticks, salami is about adventurous as they get. Ditto whole wheat bread. Pizza however, I find fairly easy to make and cheese is fairly good here.

My bitchs are with packaging in general, especially desiccants they use in cheese. I am always cutting open a package of cheese only to find that I have also cut open a desiccant package in the cheese. Plastic wrapping bananas so that they go bad quicker is another of my peeves.

You need a glass jug, i used a few 1.5L bottles, but it was a bitch to sterilize, some yeast, some fruit juice concentrate, warm water, sugar, and a balloon. I'm gonna make some mead in China if I can score some cheap honey... and then onto making some good cider when I get the time. The only thing that sucks is the wait-time :(

Jesus, you're lucky that you didn't go blind, drinking 500yen wine in Japan. Even the so-called imported French stuff, going for 3,000~4,000yen per bottle, is absolute swill.

Ever been to a restaurant where they serve wine, and see how they store the bottles upright? No better way of turning wine to vinegar than drying out the cork.

Bitch about daily life in Japan

Postby tidbits » Mon Jul 25, 2005 11:03 pm

As one who travel with baby in stroller, you guys here probably will not understand this unless when you are travelling with a big luggage or something. I realise many of the JR station still do not have elevator even those stations located in the heart of Tokyo city. (And one is not supposed to use stroller on the escalator, and on the stroller stated you are not supposed to carry the whole stroller up with baby in it...off course many mothers have no choice but just have to use escalator or staircase with extra care ) Even the JR station named 'Narita' on Narita line has no elevator, many people actually change train to keisei line there, it is so near to the Tokyo International airport, why can't they upgrade their facilities a bit. Why JR has not been improving their facilities? Are they making money? Metro Subway has better facilities than JR.

Last time I looked, Nishi Nippori station didn't even have an escalator. Given that it is one of the main stations for connecting to the Yamanote from the Skyliner coming in from Narita airport, that doesn't seem to be very smart. Certainly many locals send their heavy luggage separately but you still used to see people trying to manage their suitcases up and down the stairs. Yokoso Japan! I'm not sure if anything has changed.
Funnily enough, though, when Hamamatsucho became the main Yamanote line connection for the Tokyo Monorail to Haneda, airport, the whole station got a makeover. The passenger traffic for that connection is well below Nippori.

The last time I checked, Japan is NOT really the most retard.. excuse me.. handicapped-accessible nation on Earth. I don't know about now but the building code is still pretty behind the times and not enforced.

I hope what I'm about to say doesn't bring everyone on the forum down on me.....

It seems to me that the worst critic of Japan, and the one who most frequently posts negative news links, is the most popular person on the forum. What I truly don't understand, is why he has stayed in Japan for 20 years plus if he hates it? I know he's a good guy, but I just don't understand why he feels the way he does. Oh now you've started a flame war :flame:
Don't you know that there is a supreme alliance among the "Untouchables" on this forum.. like any other open forums out there?

At any rate, we all think there are problems in Japan that can be solved through simple common sense. It is sometimes the lack of common sense that is the root of most issues here. Whether you want to call it criticism or hatred, most of us are simply pointing out the observations and want to make our surroundings a better place to live.

Sure, I can go back to the US and bitch about all the fat people driving big fat SUV trucks, fucking their cousins, while eating mayonaise sandwitches. It's the same when I rant about Americans but does that make me anti-American?

You might as well say his name since the whole thing is so obvious. I think for someone who has stayed here for 20 years, Taro is considered unfucked gaijin and I don't think he hates Japan. He simply post lots of news link for us to read and discuss here. Many are positive, funny and weird news.
