Sea Shepherd pair kept in jail for freeing dolphins
Japan Today,- Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at 09:00 JST
TAIJI, Wakayama — Two activists from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society have been ordered detained for an additional 10 days for freeing 15 dolphins in Wakayama Prefecture

The newspaper is missing the word "trying" - they didn`t actually succeed. They cut the net, and were caught red handed. I arrived on the scene about 30 mins after this to interpret the hippies bullshit - not one dolphin was missing from the bay.

mmmm great....I can just imagine pulling up at the gas station and saying 10 gallons of unleaded hippie gasoline -

These guys are insane- they shouldn't be serving tuna to kids, let alone whale for massive PCB and mercury contamination. Don't they remember Minamata?

This "news" is old and so may be somewhere on the board already. I just came across it and was reminded of jingai's comment

JAPANESE HEALTH MINISTRY ALLOWS DANGEROUS TRADE OF TOXIC WHALE AND DOLPHIN PRODUCTS

Washington, DC, December 12, 2003: Mercury contaminated dolphin, porpoise and small whale products are widely available in Japan’s retail outlets and the Japanese Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare (JMHLW) has failed to adequately warn Japanese consumers about the serious health risks they face when they eat these products, stated the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) today... Some of the products purchased by EIA investigators in October 2003 labelled as ‘small cetacean’ or ‘toothed whale’ showed average mercury levels up to 15 times higher than the maximum allowable level set by the Japanese government.

Independent: A very murky business - This is the longer verson of the article Taro posted on page 7 of the "newbie reporter section"
I've just realized that bitter diatribe against the BBC programme (also on the newbie page) is by the same Seashepherd.org guy offering $10,000 in the top story on this thread. His main point is
We need to demand that the BBC give equal time to the dolphins.
Cyber Diver also carries this article: Kill whales, kill sharks, kill dolphins says Japan's defiant government
Zen and the brutality of killing dolphins one hack at a time...

After failing to persuade the world that killing whales, dolphins and sharks is good for both the environment and its fishing industry, the Japanese government has announced it will do what it does best: Ignore international agreements and environmental regulations aimed at protecting threatened and endangered species. Japan's right-wing, ultra-nationalist government has decided to reject the recent CITES agreement severely restricting trade in great white sharks and forbidding trade in Irrawaddy dolphins.
Masayuki Komatsu, who represents Japan's commercial whaling industry...describes whales as the "cockroaches of the sea"...repeatedly lies about the "cultural significance" of whaling to modern Japanese [and] has been criticized in Japan for adopting the rhetoric of Japanese war criminals who combined racism, nationalism and territorialism to justify Japan's aggression and brutality during the second world war.

October 8 Day of protest

Postby homesweethome » Sat Oct 08, 2005 8:33 am

Activists Worldwide Protest Japan's Dolphin Slaughter

http://www.ens-newswire.com/ens/oct2005/2005-10-07-06.asp

I wrote to Sea Shepard asking if they still were offering the $10,000 prize, they wrote back and said the Japanese Government was prohibiting any filming of the dolphin/whale slaughter. I didn't see how they could 'prohibit' something like that. This article seems to say the same thing. So if anybody tries to film the anything that embarrasses the government they get arrested? I better start deleting those files right away.

Japan Times: 'Secret' dolphin slaughter defies protests
Japan's annual slaughter of thousands of dolphins began Oct. 8 in the traditional whaling town of Taiji on the Kii Peninsula of Honshu's Wakayama Prefecture. These "drive fisheries" triggered demonstrations, held under the "Japan Dolphin Day" banner, in 28 countries. The protests went almost entirely unreported in Japan, where only very few people are aware of what goes on...more...

We're going to have to keep that blue sashimi away from AO. I can tell he's already scheming.

Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

"The Cove" was screened at the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday with a lot of promotional activity. There are some other clips of the film here which show how the special effects company Industrial Light & Magic helped the film-makers disguise their cameras.

This morning's LA Times

Some say the government is using a pair of arrested Greenpeace activists to send a warning to others in Japan who oppose the nation's controversial whale hunt.

Junichi Sato's face clenched when he recalled opening the reeking box of whale meat -- all 50 pounds of it.

"At first we thought it was someone's dismembered body," Sato said. "It was quite depressing."

He and fellow Greenpeace activist Toru Suzuki had tracked the package to a mail depot in northern Japan after tipsters told them it contained whale meat bound for the country's black market, smuggled by crew members of a ship commissioned to kill the mammals for scientific research, not profit.

But when they held a cameras-flashing news conference last spring to turn the meat over to police, the officers instead arrested the activists for trespass and theft.

That put them at the center of a bitter face-off between environmentalists and the Japanese government, which many believe wants to severely punish the pair as a warning to citizens who question the country's controversial whaling policy.

Japanese officials say the men -- dubbed the Tokyo Two -- are eco-terrorists who stole the meat from a legitimate transporter to falsely malign the nation's whaling establishment. The pair faced a pretrial hearing in their case this week; they could receive up to 10 years in jail if convicted.
