Japanese TV - Sacrilege of Mad Max

I sat down late last night to watch the video (taped from TV yesterday) of one of the all time classic movies, Mad Max, and I was HORRIFIED that the dubbed version was used. No not dubbed into Japanese, but dubbed from the original Australian accents into the American accents that were used (so stupidly) for the US release of the film. I was so disgusted that I had to turn it off!! It was dreadful.

Fortunately most studios have more faith in the intelligence of US audiences than to do this anymore.

The dubbed version is just so WRONG..

Actually, it's quite ironic when you consider that Mel Gibson was born in New York!

My out-laws' TV has a "second language" feature - I wonder if they broadcast both dubbings that day???

I feel your pain Gomi... At least, in your case, ENGLISH was provided. I bought into Catv and even WOWOW (at over +2000/yen per month), and if I had 100 yen for every time they showed Hollywood/whatever movies without the original English, the fucking service would pay for itself.

(Yes, I know what button to press to switch, but it's very hit-or-miss for English to be provided at all!).

If anyone can provide the nhk/wowow english phone numbers/email addresses for complaints, please do.

The shaded programs are broadcast in English. They also will run the same movie a couple times a month in both English and Japanese..

The American dubbed version has been around for a long long time, before Austrailian movies became popular with Hollywood.

Sure but why did the studio feel the need to do it in the first place? If I was American, I would feel insulted that a substandard dubbed version would be "easier to understand". The actors speak English for goodness sake and I would be confident that the average US movie go-er has above the room temperature IQ required to decipher a different accent.

It is not just the dubbing but the such poor quality of the voice talent, the timing and even the entire audio track is a disaster.

So which soundtrack do you think is best? The original Australian language track or the English dubbed track? I've heard about the dubbing issue for years & everyone saying the Australian track is far superior. So i've finally had a chance to check it out when i bought the MGM dvd.

Well i was disapointed.Since i've seen the film countless times over the years since i was 12 or so.I'm just so used to the English version. I didn't like how Goose or the Chief sounded,they seemed lazy..while in English it seemed more enthusiastic. The other charecter's didn't sound that bad,but then Johny the Boy & the main leader of the gang just seemed to speak so quietly that they did not seem menacing.

Though the worst part about the track both 5.1 & mono in Australian was the extreme lack of punch in the sound FX.Everything from the roar of a engine,screeching tires,the music & everything seemed so subdued no matter how low i turned up the volume. Yet when switching it on the mono English track,it was louder & packed quit a punch just how i like it & remember. So naturally i prefer the English track though some may disagree with it. In fact the dubbing is actual good & matches with there mouths unlike other dubbings.

+ I find it ironic that the Australian track seemed so subdued.Usualy it's the dubbed track that does for some reason.

Mad Max was okay. "The Road Warrior" (Mad Max 2) was the best of the three films IMHO.

Goose or the Chief sounded,they seemed lazy..while in English it seemed more enthusiastic.

The dubbed version Goose was not Goose. Of all the dubbed voices it stripped his character more so than any of the others.
