Japan replaces extreme TV shows with duller fare
Yahoo! News, Tue, Apr 18, 2006
TOKYO (Hollywood Reporter) -
Nightly doses of pain, degradation and downright embarrassment that once captivated Japanese TV viewers have been toned down dramatically after widespread concerns about their impact on society.
Some programs that horrified viewers and hiked ratings have been replaced with chat shows, cooking series and low-cost dramas -- chasing away viewers in the process....more...

Talking about pain and degradation on the J-telly, what happened to that truly vile drama that a few months ago was on TBS on Saturday nights - the one with the sadistic school teacher who inflicted tortures on her students that would've made an Argentinian Death Squad member blush.

Speaking of degrading anyone watching this "My Wife is a Gaijin" crap?

Tis like a televised Dog Show.... look at my pet gaijin! Isn't she cute! Doesn't she speak Japanese well! It's amazing!

yep, that show was horrible.

and why is it only gaijin gals with japanese dudes? surely there are way more relationships the other way around. or am i underestimating the wife import business?

(and before i get jumped on of course i know there are plenty of nice japanese guys, some of whom are married to ncie western friends of mine...)

It's because gaijin girl + japanese boy is still novel and exotic.

The other way round is not.

aaaa...so sad. I am getting sick of seeing the same faces for years and years, though I am impressed that there are more and more women who last longer than 6 months...and some have made it for several decades.

When the Swedish reporter asked you where you got your hat and glasses, did you storm out of the interview a la Tom Cruise when he was asked about Nicole Kidman in an interview by a Swedish reporter? :D

WOW! That's an interesting story about Mr. Benkow vs. Mr. Crush, I mean Cruise, or whatever!

:spin:

The next time you get interviewed by a Swedish reporter, your duty will be to reenact the Tom Cruise incident and get it all on tape! Points for Scientology references, jumping on a couch, laughing maniacally, and incorporating the line, "Did you order a Code Red?".

Taro's link is dead and the story is too. I haven't seen a fun degrading show on J-TV for at least 6 years (has anyone else?) and this is at least part of the reason we opted for Sky.

My guess is that this is still a story in the US is because they 'discovered' the joys of late night TV somewhere around 2002.

Some programs that horrified viewers and hiked ratings have been replaced with chat shows, cooking series and low-cost dramas -- chasing away viewers in the process.
"Part of the problem is that there were a couple of accidents in the shows and people got hurt and almost died" said Shizuka Ota.
Takeshi's Castle's original airing, in the late '80s, coincided with the bursting of Japan's economic bubble, another severe blow to the nation's cultural pride. Count Takeshi, then, presides over a stage on which the intense shame that, in Japanese culture, is thought to result from failure is not only externalized and ritualized into a game, but perhaps relieved. While America is far too safety-obsessed and litigious to allow its TV producers to inflict the same level of physical damage on contestants, the show's imported mayhem and subsequent emotional release seem particularly well-suited to our own era of high anxiety. Most Extreme Elimination Challenge or MXC's main footage is taken from the Japanese reality show Takeshi's Castle, ...

now its Beat Takeshi Kitano's cooking show !!
