Whaling in Aussie waters

Postby Ketou » Tue Oct 19, 2004 12:50 pm

A JAPANESE whaling fleet has killed more than 400 minke whales while illegally operating inside Australia's whale sanctuary over the past four years, an Australian court is to be told today....

I don't see whats wrong with killin off a few whales. We kill off most other animals, and we all know that - animals taste good - end of story! 8)

Japan faces whale 'cruelty' claim
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/5091674.stm
Australia is to present what it says is proof that Japan's scientific whaling programme is cruel, to the meeting of the International Whaling Commission.
Environmentalists who filmed Japanese boats whaling in the Antarctic say that some animals took 30 minutes to die. Japan says these cases are exceptions.

Activists win right to sue Japanese whalers

IOL.co.za wrote:
An animal rights group on Friday won the right to sue a Japanese whaling company for allegedly killing hundreds of whales inside an Australian reserve.

Last year, the Federal Court denied Humane Society International permission to sue Japanese whaling company Kyodo Senpaku for allegedly slaughtering around 400 minke whales in Antarctic waters that the Australian government has declared a whale sanctuary.

But on Friday the Federal Court overturned that decision, saying the judge had incorrectly taken political considerations into account.

In the original ruling, Federal Court judge James Allsop held that Australia cannot legally block the company from hunting in international waters protected by Australia because Tokyo does not recognize Australia's jurisdiction there.

Humane Society International appealed the decision to the full court, and Allsop's two colleagues on the bench found that he had relied too heavily on a government submission claiming the proposed lawsuit would harm Australia's relations with Japan.

"We are also persuaded that the primary judge was in error in attaching weight to what we would characterize as a political consideration," Chief Justice Michael Black and Justice Ray Finkelstein said in their judgment.

"It may be accepted that whilst legal disputes may occur in a political context, the exclusively political dimension of the dispute" cannot be resolved in the courts, the judgment said.

A spokeswoman for Humane Society International, Nicola Beynon, said the organization would file an injunction against Kyodo Senpaku sometime next week, and hopes to resolve the matter before the whale-hunting season begins in December.

. . . Kyodo Senpaku could not immediately be reached for comment . . . more

If it's obvious that whale numbers cannot support commercial whaling by everyone at once but, arguably, numbers of some whales may support whaling by a couple of nations, shouldn't those whaling nations compensate the ones who refrain?

Isn't the current position like an apple tree between your land and your neighbour's where they take all the apples every year?

Just a thought.

And now this:

Japanese poached $5bn worth of tuna

The Adelaide Advertiser wrote:
JAPANESE fishermen have illegally caught more than $5 billion worth of tuna in the past 20 years, a major report shows.

The report by a special panel of the international Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna found that Japan's poaching amounted to an average of 8500 tonnes a year.

The over-fishing will be examined at a special meeting of the extended commission being held in Canberra today and tomorrow.

. . . Local tuna fishermen feel the scandal has the potential to be a bigger international issue than the slaughter of whales by Japanese fishermen.

The report has also shocked the Port Lincoln fishing community, after years of being told southern bluefin tuna stocks were at dangerously low levels . . . more

How about them apples?

Useless factoid for today - have been to Port Lincoln a few months ago and was proudly told by the local taxi driver that there are more millionaires per capita in Port Lincoln than in any other Australian town or city. This is primarily because there are so many tuna fishermen there. (That and the abalone divers)

I am from SA and have spent time in Port Lincoln (I lived just across the gulf), I would say that this particular statistic is accurate, but not according to any cencus or "official" statistics.. There is a serious amount of under handed action going on in Port Lincoln.. However I do know that the tuna farmer owners will pay HUGE money for security for the Tuna farms. I have put in some pretty intense radar and tracking setups on those farms.

Also if you go about 50kms to the West, there is a some quite large cash crops that are also not the most legal. There sure would be a lot of millionaires there, but legitimate ones?? The abalone divers that are official would represent about 3% of the actual divers. There is good money in it, not the easiest work, but good money..

Another strange fact is that the Port Lincoln region has the highest density of White Pointer Sharks anywhere in the world.. They aren't bad if they are well fed.. Try and get one out of Tuna pen, now that is funny to watch!!

Which is why GG's Mum was so worried about her going into the waters in that area and actually forbade her to swim.

(Of course who was the first one in when we went to the beach?)

Even more ironically was that the shark attack that happened closest to our visit was actually on the Gold Coast where it is supposedly safer from shark attack.......

If that was the same attack we talked about on the board when you were in the land of OZ, I think that was bull sharks not white pointers which had lunch with that gal.

No, Rudd is chasing more LCD votes. If he gets into office and tries to pull that shit it will be stopped at the gates by export interests. Also, typical to ALP pre-election hot air, there is no outline of the costs.

Aussie's Labour party seemed to had said Aussie army should dispatch planes to inspect J-whaling ship. If Aussie want to start war against us, we Japanese pleasurely accept it. When WW2, Aussie could had beated us because of Uncle Sam's army presence. Aussie army without Uncle Sam is like a baby compared with our Chrysanthemum army.

Uncle Sam has military based in Australia again, Take. Might mean another ass kicking for the Chrysanthemum team. How do you see it? You refer to "if" a lot. Well, "If" is a mighty big word and is difficult to use, i.e. the dog would've caught the rabbit IF he didn't stop to take a shit.

The Chrysanthemum army is a spread juicy pussy read to be deflowered by the quickest, biggest dick ready to deflower it.

Basically Japan is fucked every way to Tuesday, anyway, anytime, anyplace, any country chooses.

Hey Meriken Oyaji,
Uncle Sam's ruling power will end within 20~30 years from now on.
You can say like that to us until that.
We Japanese need to revise constitution to beat enemy challenging us.
Aussie better refrain from their rant to Japan.

By the way, one bitch seem to be elated.

It cannot be that Japan quit whale hunting or eating itself.
Give up.

Sheer ignorance on the part of Japan. There's no tradition of hunting Humpback whales in Antartic waters in Japan, so why the hell are they proposing to hunt at least 50 of them this season?

Bullshit.

Laughed my ass off at the idiot who said this at the send-off party (according to the MDN):

Some Idiot (Mission Leader Hajime Ishikawa) wrote:They're violent environmental terrorists.
Their violence is unforgivable ... we must fight against their hypocrisy and lies.

Hypocrisy and lies!?? Unbelievable! Maybe the guy doesn't know the meaning of those two words.

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest if one of these "environmental terrorist" groups actually did something
to stop the whaling. Oh.....like sinking one of the ships perhaps. If one of these groups actually does
something material to stop the whaling I'll donate US$1000 to that group and post a scan of the money
order here on FG.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
