Cycling laws

Postby gomichild » Mon Jul 31, 2006 11:34 pm

I'm looking for them to be listed online somewhere - although any suggestions of where I should ask for them would be appreciated.

English or Japanese OK.

(Had another cycling accident *sigh*)

A very brief summary which probably won't help you much. Here's a Japanese page with some links.

Other links here and here.

Also, the Bicycle Culture Centre ought to know a thing or two.

anyone know where to call/go when your bike in osaka is taken away? my friend parked in her usual place this morning, but when returned all the bikes were gone and the no parking barrier was up. :(

It depends on where her bike was parked. There will have been signs on the ground and posted on poles etc telling her where to call and/or go to get her bike back. Inevitably the impound lot will be quite some distance away and far from a station -- they seem to do this on purpose, the bastards. :(

(If your friend needs a ride to the bike impound lot drop me a PM.)

there were no signs or anything posted. :(

i remember a few years ago there was a website of impounded bikes where you could put in the registration number and it would say where it was, but i can't find it anymore.

Japanese cycling law is has just been nominated to replace 'Lydford Law' (which few people understand these days) as my euphemism of choice as it is clear to me that bicycle laws only exist to encourage people to not ride bicycles and thus increase automobile ownership.

absolutely, impossible.

And in the slim chance that there weren't chances are a campaign has been going on in the city around bicycle manners.

It would be very unusual for Osaka City to remove bikes and not put up any signs. I suppose the guys removing the bikes could have forgotten, or maybe they got washed away in the rain, but in many years here I've never seen Osaka City remove bikes and not put up signs.

If she was parked on private property or in front of a very large building it is possible that her bike was moved by the business/company she was parked near. It's also possible that a bunch of people came by and just scooped up all the bikes in that area to ship off to NK or somewhere.

She might want to swing by a nearby koban and ask if bikes were picked up on the date hers went missing. She might also try visiting the kuyakusho for that area as they should know the schedule for bike removal at the location where her bike was. The kuyakusho should also be able to tell her where her bike was taken if it was picked up at area X on day Y.

i agree, it's very unusual for that to happen in osaka. i've never had one taken, but i've seen loads of times the removal guys come round and are very careful to put up a sign. it was pissing down that day (saturday), so maybe it did get washed away.

she ended up buying a new one, it was time anyway. i'll send her the info above as a future reference though. thanks as always, FGL!
