The Japanese golf penalty for a hole-in-one is sending everyone you know a set of golf balls or some other small gift along with a card that says where and when you got the hole in one.

Some clubs sell hole-in-one insurance in case the unthinkable happens.

The closest I've seen in the U.S. is you're responsible for buying the first round of beer at the clubhouse.

First off you must buy your playing parnters a nice gift, as well as the caddy, who must be a witness to the hole in one. Then you are expected to buy a gift for the golf course, to be used on the course, a huge tree or new benches etc. Then you might give gifts to some slub members if you are a member, and then to some of your friends and relatives. It's totalyy f*cked I know, but that's they way its done here. I have a three year insurance policy through Dai-ichi seimei. It cost Y15000 for the three years. All major life insurance companies have these policies. Hell I just found out they have a Ice Hockey policy. My golf insurance also covers if I hit someone with a ball, if my clubs are stolen or any damage incurred while playing.

Yeah, the Japanese response is pretty extreme, but I understand the buying a round of beer for the witnesses... unless you make sure they're happy, you never hit that hole in one, did you?

I like golf, but until you hit that one great shot with your friends watching, it can be a frustrating experience.

Probably the "gheyist" part are the attitudes that some of the other players bring to the course. For some reason, golf attracts a lot of assholes.
