Hehe. That reminds me of the old SNL sketch...

Hugh Jackman : Christmas was my favorite time of the year. I always looked forward to the return of the Christmas Kangaroo. But.. then when I was 12, tragedy struck. My dad lost the fight.

When the Kangaroo won, it was pretty much up to him what happened. More often than not, that'd mean we didn't any get presents.. ..and my dad got sodomized.

It was a rough time around the Jackman homestead. I thought things would get better next Christmas, but no. My father ended up losing the next four years in a row. It was horrible. After a while, I questioned if my dad was even trying to win. [ dissolve to older Dad primpimg in preparation for the Christmas Kangaroo's arrival. The Kangaroo arrives, and Dad lays a few girly punches before throwing in the towel ]

Dad: Damn. Looks like you win. Again. Kids, go get him a Scotch and Soda.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Shit, man. If it had Hugh Jackman in it, it can't be refered to as an "old SNL sketch", can it? I guess I'm getting old.

I checked Debito's web page for the first time in many a-year. First, he's changed his pic, and not for the better. Second, he describes himself as a "father of two with a Japanese woman". Brilliant deducer of things that I am, I take this to mean he's no longer married. An affair with a student? Who's got the dish on Fatty McFatty?

Yeah, the writing was on the wall when he wanted his dosanko to go along with re-naming the kids Arudou. Still, one can't help feeling a little sorry for him - especially if he's having to pay child support on an English teacher's income.

Debito fans should read his account of a trip with Peace Boat. It sounds like a real Voyage of the Damned. It's a pretty stinging indictment of Japan if Peace Boat is its most notable NGO.

This really belongs in another thread, but one interesting thing he mentioned in that blog post was that his wife had used the (verrry long) katakana rendering of "Aldwinkle" before switching back to Sugawara. I've noticed that quite a few J-wives of FGs continue using their original family names. My wife, on the other hand, adopted my bland, WASPy last name. What are the percentages? Grist for an FG poll.

The Japanese legal system identifies with the name on the koseki. As You know, when FG's marry, not having their own koseki, they are entered on the wife's koseki and so under J-law, technically, they become a "mukou" on the koseki and the gaiji toroku is their J-equivalent of the Juminhyou. The wife's legal name will remain her family name, although nothing is illegal about her using her married name. Confused yet?

My wife finds it much easier to use her Japanese name for things Japanese when the use of my FG name might be more difficult, or cause misunderstandings, or when dealing with some turd who is looking to bomb pearl harbor again.

Ah, thanks for the info. Clear as mud, J-law so reliably is. By the way, would "Boothe" be katakana-ized as "Bu-su"? That could be a problem for your better half. ;)

Now do you see why she uses her Japanese name?

I like Debito and don't consider him a Japan basher. He criticizes when criticism is due, but he doesn't trash the country.

It was on his site that I learned about Japanese law not providing for joint custody. I'm sorry to read that he's now living that situation. I hope Japan changes its stance on joint custody soon.

Aso urges French presidential candidate to read 'manga'
http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20070421a9.html
Segolene Royal has criticized "manga" comics and animation as being violent and pornographic.

Aso was also asked to comment on Royal's main rival, rightist Nicolas Sarkozy, The former interior minister has reportedly said he doesn't like sumo. He was quoted in the weekly magazine Paris Match in 2004 as describing Japan's national sport as "battles between obese guys with slicked-down topknots." Sarkozy has denied that he made the comment.

Aso would not comment on the Sarkozy remark. He told reporters they should not react so much to comments from foreigners about Japanese culture.

"Why are you worried so much if someone in France makes this kind of remark?" Aso asked.

Whoever the winner is the presidential election -- which begins Sunday -- the departure of Jacques Chirac, a noted Japanophile and sumo enthusiast, will not seriously affect Japan-France ties, the foreign minister said.

Sarkozy made the comment only to spite Chirac, i think the guy couldn't care less about japan.
It was at the peak of the Chirac/Sarkozy rivalry, basically Sarkozy had taken the helm of the UMP, which the main right-wing party in france which Chirac basically founded back in the 80's.
Chirac replied to comments made by a journalist that implied that Sarkozy was now a political rival, that Sarkozy was still under his command as an interior minister and famously said "I order, he executes".
That pissed off Sarko something bad and while on a trip in Hong-Kong he started talking shit about japan as a way to talk shit about his boss.
So he said that stuff about sumos and he also said that Tokyo was an ugly urban nightmare of city compared to Hong-Kong which really proves that the guy had no idea and was just blurbing shit to piss off his boss.
It's also like a symbol, his boss is an old guy fascinated by japan, while he's a young shark into china.
It's all politics, he's the guy with a modern view of the world who will support the blazing economic engine that is china, while his boss and mentor is an old fuck who's fascinated with an "old" and declining power.
As for Royal it's, true she was like a light french Tipper Gore back in the 80's, but you have to understand that at that time they were showing Fist of the North Star on a kid's show.
I used to watch that head exploding festival of an anime when i was 12, we were crazy about that stuff. It was the most violent shit i had ever seen at the time,
One character on the show could decapitate an oversized apocalyptic mutant with his bare hands, it beats the crap outta Pokemon anyday.
