Better than Blade Runner--Tokyo is the 'RISKIEST'

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue Mar 11, 2003 8:23 pm

World's riskiest city
In the study "Topics Natural Catastrophes 2002," experts of the world's largest reinsurance firm have developed an index for the world's 50-largest metropolitan areas, quantifying their risk potentials for all types of natural maladies, as well as the cities' vulnerabilities and concentrations of exposed values.
Number one was Japan's Tokyo-Yokohama region, which recorded a risk index of 710, thus winning the dubious honor as the world's "riskiest" city.

Hey, I was shocked the anshin baka earthdrilled-to-tears Japanese beat out laid-back Mexico City! 8O

I suppose Guatemala City doesn't make the top 50 cities of the world with only two million people but they HAD TO move the entire capital ciity 100km and rename the ruins Antigua Guatemala because the earthquakes were and still are so bad.

hmm.. i heard it was pretty safe there as far as natural disasters...? most people tell me a hurricane is just a heavy wind in which an umbrella may get turned inside out. and an earthquake just makes you shake around a little, but nothing serious. i know in the past they have had serious earthquakes, but so have so many places around the world. but i don't understand why they would rank as the riskiest, when it doesn't seem to me from what i've heard that it is a very unsafe city @ all concerning nature.

So what sort of natural disaster is Tokyo not at risk from?
- earthquake
- volcano (or is Fuji-san too far away?)
- tsunami (living at the foot of central Tokyo's biggest mountain (80m  ) has its advantages)
- typhoon
- godzilla

Maybe Tokyo doesn't have so many blizzards or heat waves, but they only tend to kill off the elderly. It's also probably not a high risk for a plague of locusts.

Make that ACTIVE volcanos
Both Fuji-san and Hakone classified as activeand well as the City of Tokyo owned islands of Oshima, Miyajima, et al.
Check out the destructive plume of Fuji-san on Tokyo!

Looks like I'm almost safe.

Volcanoes are fun. :D A bit scary waking up to a morning cloaked in darkness. But after that I spent many days enjoying making sand castles out of the ash from Mt Galunggung (1981) in Bandung.

U.S. cities closely followed, with San Francisco at No. 2 and Los Angeles at No. 3. San Francisco scored a risk index of 167 and L.A. recorded a risk index of 100.

Not sure how they calculate risk index but #1 at 710 points seems a hell of a lot higher than #2 at 167.

But then people like me live in Tokyo so the risk factor increases exponentially.. 8O

c'mon - if you worried about things like this you would live on a rock in the south pacific (oh not a bad idea) or never leave your house.. stuff it I could walk under a bus tomorrow.. carpe diem.
