Hmmm...A clock that is wholly dependent on an outside signal in order to work correctly...I don't know impressed by the faith by J consumers that there will always be a signal and it will be always be correct or bewildered by J consumers complete lack of faith in their own ability to know what the correct time is and that apparently they're not qualified to make that decision on their own. While there are clocks that can be updated by radio waves in the US, they tend to be digital ones (ie, it is more complex to set than standard analogue clock, so an automatic feature would be handy for some folks) and the ones I've fiddled with still have an override function.

Now what a minute. I mentioned the "Third Man" and the Ebisu Station chime one day while we rode the Yamanote (when likely neither of us was sober) and you gave a me a serious lecture about how wrong I was to connect the two. In fact, you went and hummed through what you thought to be the guitar parts yourself. Now, what are you saying? Or are you trying to drive me crazy?

Around eighteen months ago I seemed to know what I was talking about. I can certainly recall not being sober recently but I'm struggling to remember riding the Yamanote with you. Where were we going? Did I get there?

Since I was looking for it to see if I was remembering it correctly...For those trying to remember what exactly the third man theme sounds like in all of its ear shattering. mind melting 78 RMP LP glory

Mulboyne wrote:Well, I now have one. I'd like to tell you how I went through the ekinet link and took delivery at a nearby JR station but, in reality, I just stumbled across them on sale in the Shinjuku Tokyu Hands. It's an older version, so it doesn't have the Third Man theme from Ebisu station or the Tetsuwan Atomu theme from Takadonababa as the web site advertises.

What is more problematic for overseas use is that it's a 電]Japan Standard Time Project[/URL] transmitters in Fukushima and Kyushu. At least, it is supposed to. I've tried to start it three times so far and it always sets itself 10 minutes slow. Quite in order for the British railway system but inappropriate for the punctual Yamanote line. I may be doing something wrong but I suspect I'll be trekking back to Tokyu Hands in the next few days.

Bottom line is that you can't use this clock overseas except to listen to the station chimes. At 7,980 yen, it's far too expensive but is not a bad gimmick gift for someone who has just got permanent residence.

Sounds interesting but I guess it's too bad we can't use it outside Japan. Thanks for the review.

I'm not sure how long these two models have been on sale but you can now buy clocks for the Chuo Line and Keihin-Tohoku Line. There's also a Shinkansen N700 series clock but, since there are fewer platform melodies on shinkansen routes, they've added in-carriage announcements. Details in Japanese here.
