Krispy Kreme To Battle Mister Donut

Postby Mulboyne » Wed Jul 05, 2006 11:08 pm

[floatl]Image[/floatl]MSN: Krispy Kreme to Open Stores in Japan
Doughnut maker Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. said Wednesday it has awarded development rights for the greater Tokyo area to Krispy Kreme Doughnut Japan Co. a joint-venture between Revamp Corp., Lotte Co. and Takeo Shigemitsu, who is president of Lotte Co. Under the agreement, Krispy Kreme Doughnut Japan Co. will open about 40 stores over the next five years in the Greater Tokyo area. The first is scheduled to open in Tokyo in the fall. Krispy Kreme does not have an ownership position in Krispy Kreme Doughnut Japan Co. An affiliate of Lotte Co. is Krispy Kreme's franchisee for South Korea and operates nine stores there.

This is not a good thing! The potential for this to cause waistline expansion is not good from an eye candy perspective.

What? They already have KFC, Mickey D, Domino's Pizza but you don't have a national crisis. It is highly unlikely that the Japanese will implement fast food as the center of their diet. I am actually excited to have other choices than the expensive MisuDona (Mr. Donut) crap.

packin' on the lbs.

Postby Iraira » Thu Jul 06, 2006 12:29 am

True, the J-peeps ain't bursting forth like Americans, but here's some deep-fried data anyway.

"Men in all age groups have grown heavier in the past two decades in Japan. The highest rate of obesity is among men in their 40s: 34% in 2003, up from 23% in 1980, according to the National Health and Nutrition Survey. While older women are also growing fatter, younger fashion-conscious women tend to be underweight.

Among children, 8% were obese or at risk of obesity in 2004, compared with fewer than 6% in 1980. In the United States, experts believe about 30% of kids are overweight.

Diabetes is a leading concern. While the number of deaths from the disease has fallen in the past decade, more than 2 million people are being treated for it in Japan — an increase of about 53% from 15 years ago. The number treated for high blood pressure has also grown about 9% in the past 10 years, the Health Ministry says. "

I completely agree with you on that. The problem is that humans are not good at directing what areas of the body should store the excess adipose. If we were, Beverly Hills plastic surgeons would take a huge hit.

The first Krispy Kreme store will open in Shinjuku's Southern Terrace (across the tracks from Takashimya) on Friday 15th.

.. bartenders that know how to make a Manhattan
See you in PyonPyang!

Some real Mexican food would be nice....El Torito don't make the grade at home, it sure don't here. If Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles opened out here, I'd be there everyday until the grease clogged up every artery.

Ooooo!....Rainbow Sprinkles

Postby Kuang_Grade » Thu Dec 14, 2006 10:56 am

Judging by their website, they don't look to be doing anything donut wise special for Japan that they don't do in the US (http://www.krispykreme.com/varieties.html) although the J list has half the variety of the US list...waaa, no apple filled? But I'm surprised they aren't pushing the snowman version, whose cuteness would likely have significant J appeal.

Who the hell in their right mind would line up before opening to buy donuts!?

Those two eigo-bandits at the end of the clip were pretty funny though.

Only in Japan..
Though, I guess it shows that the J people are polite and have manners, as if this was somewhere like New York, you'd have the po' people storm the place.

That dude that scored the year supply of free Kripy Kreme will get sick of them at the end.

This was at the night of the 31st. They had a whole mess of people stand in line on the front porch in railing back and forth like they do at Disneyland. Sadly, I was crazy enough to be part of this as well (which was a bad mistake..) and waited in line for one and a half hours in the frickin cold! I asked the security guy whom was guarding to ensure no one was taking cuts if the line had always been this bad. He says it was like that for every single day since the opening day.

The new "Double Berry Heart" Krispy Kreme doughnut on sale from Wednesday. Blueberry inside and coated with strawberry icing, this doughnut was developed specifically for Japan and will be available until the end of March, aiming chiefly at Valentine's Day and White Day.

In a similar move, Nathan's has been giving the Japanese market a shot, no doubt sparked by the success of Kobayashi at Coney Island. This Mainichi story from 2004 says:
"The winner of the contest will be able to take part in the World Championships in New York on July 4," a spokesman for the Japanese branch of Nathan's, America's largest hot dog chain, says to Shukan Shincho. "We opened our first store in Tokyo's Harajuku late last year. We're holding this eating contest to mark the opening of our second outlet in Shiodome." Nathan's plans to open 200 outlets over the next five years.

The Harajuku store is gone. As of last summer I know the Shiodome store was still there. There is also one in the Nomura Bldg. in Shinjuku. There used to be one next to Velfarre in Roppongi but I don't know if that is still there. I remember going into an izakaya within viewing distance of that stand. After attempting to order about 8 items from their menu only to be told they were out, I asked the waiter if I could pick up a hotdog across the street and bring it inside.

Their Web page lists a total of 6, but not the Roppongi one. They've got a ways to go to get to 200. Edit: I take that back somewhat. Check here and there are about 15 more stores.

When did the Harajuku one close down? I definitely went there last Fall. There's one in Hiroo close to National Azabu.
