Hardline anti-whaling activists are threatening to sacrifice their ship in Antarctic waters by ramming a Japanese whaler.

But I do wonder what Captain Watson's plan was after he succeeded in getting his ship stuck in the rear end of a trawler full of pissed-off Japanese sailors, outnumbering him and his crew 10 to 1.

Actually, they do say "props" or propeller for small boats such as speed boats, but like you say, I don't know if that would apply to that size of a ship.

What is interesting here is Sea Shepard and their neglect for human safety in the effort to protect whales.

Setting the protect the whales issue aside, I think at least one of their ship captains has been tried for ramming a fishing/whaling craft in the past. Given their pre-stated intentions, it would appear that the enema was applied. What easier target than a slow moving whaler backing toward you. Instant finger wave.

Another point is that I thought intentional endangerment of vessles in international waters/sea lanes was covered by international law. Yet Sea Sheppard says

"It's a circus, that's for sure. But it could all be prevented by upholding international law," Watson said.

It's a well known fact that organizations like PETA don't give a crap about humans.

As I stated, I'm pretty sure that "propeller" when it comes to watercraft applies only to boats... then again I'm not sure exactly what the borderline between a ship and a boat is.

But I'm pretty sure they use the term "screw" even in Japan. Plus, it sounds so much cooler.

?? Not sure I follow. I eat meat and only casually support animal rights, so I'm hardly a radical. But I do think that PETA gets a bad rap for supporting a worthwhile cause. Just because PETA supports animal rights doesn't mean they advocate that people should be a secondary consideration to animals.

I felt that the Fox News cite on this would be most appropriate, since it is of Bird's favorite sources of news. It does give a good look at the sensitive and caring and of course, ethical work that some of PETA's people do for our furry friends (hopefully beavers not included)!

Once in Australia, Watson fears the Farley Mowat could be permanently stranded in Melbourne, as it was deregistered by Belize on December 29, and left port as a pirate vessel.

The Robert Hunter was registered to Britain when it left port, and provided it returns to Melbourne by February 19, British time, it will be able to leave once it is reregistered elsewhere, Watson said.

He said the Farley Mowat had only eight days of fuel left, and with Melbourne about eight days' journey for that vessel, he had no choice but to head back to port today.

Original plans to take fuel from the Robert Hunter were abandoned because of the rough weather, he said.

The Robert Hunter, a faster ship, would make it back to Melbourne before it was deregistered, provided there were no storms, he said...."

KAGOSHIMA -- A freighter is suspected of colliding with a tuna fishing boat before fleeing late last week, leaving two crewmembers and a TV cameraman from the fishing boat to drift in a lifeboat for three days, the freighter's owner said Wednesday.

The Marue Ferry company based in Kagoshima reported to the 10th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters on Tuesday that its 3,891-ton Takachiho freighter is highly likely to have collided with the 9.1-ton Yukiyoshi Maru fishing boat off Tanegashima Island, Kagoshima Prefecture.

The captain of the Takachiho found part of the vessel's bow was damaged and reported it to SNK Ocean Co. which leases the ship from Marue. Crewmembers of the freighter claim that they were unaware of the accident.

Blue paint from the freighter's body was scratched off and was seen on the fishing boat. The Takachiho was cruising off Tanegashima Island at about 10 a.m. on Friday when the accident occurred.

The Takachiho was headed for Tokyo from Naha when it is believed to have collided with the Yukiyoshi Maru.

Coast guard officers rescued two crewmembers of the Yukiyoshi Maru and a TV cameraman covering their fishing operations, who were all found in a lifeboat floating off Kushima, Miyazaki Prefecture, on Monday.

The Yukiyoshi Maru is owned by Hyuga Fishermen's Cooperative in Miyazaki Prefecture.[/INDENT]

Japan whale ship on fire in Antarctic waters, crew man missing

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - A Japanese whaling ship is on fire in the Ross Sea in Antarctica, and initial reports said one crew member is missing, New Zealand officials said Thursday.

The Nisshin Maru sent out a distress call early Thursday and was evacuated by most of its 161-member crew as about 20 stayed on board to fight the fire, Maritime New Zealand spokesman Steve Corbett said.

"The ship has lost all engine power,'' he said, adding that three of the four other ships in the whaling fleet were alongside the disabled ship.

Corbett said one of the crew was "unaccounted for,'' but it is not clear whether the crewman is missing within the ship, perished in the fire or went overboard into the icy Antarctic waters.

The fire started below decks and the "crew are still fighting it _ but with 20 people on board they (the crew) are confident it won't sink and the fire won't spread further,'' he said....more...
