Deposit 1,001 yen: pay 525 yen service charge

Yen for profits sees banks now charging for coin deposits
The Asahi Shimbun / March 18
It may sound like penny-pinching, but regional banks say hard economic times justify the need to go after every yen to earn revenue. So now they're charging commissions for deposits made with coins.
Five regional banks have already begun charging when bagfuls of coins are presented to tellers.....charging 210 yen for deposits of between 301 and 500 coins, 315 yen for 501 to 1,000 coins and 525 yen for more than 1,001 coins.

For three years in Japan, I started accumulating masses of 1 yen coins, and when I had a huge jar of them after three years, after lugging the huge jar to the bank depositing all of them it came to about 2300 yen total.

Since then I have avowed to never do that practice again, and actually make the effort to pay in such a way that I use the 1 yen coins in the wallet. I don't care if the people behind me in line have to wait forever for me to find and extract those bloody tiny coins....

I went to Citibank with a year's worth a few years ago. They had a machine to do the counting. It worked like a charm; a deposit of nearly 10,000 yen was made into my account. Based on this, I tried the same thing at the same branch just a few months ago. But this time was told by the lady at the counter that such a machine didn't exist and in fact has never existed. After telling the lady my happy story of making a similar deposit a few years before, she still denied the existence of such a machine. I must have 20,000 worth of coins this time.

That machine did exist! Five years ago, the then current model of Hitachi ATM/cash dispenser at Sumitomo Banks accepted up to 100 One yen coins.

After all the recent banking soap operas, I found that new bank forced upon me did not have the same 1 yen coin feature. Now I have sacks of those damn aluminum foil coins.

So their doing away with the coin counting ATMs?

That was one of the COOLEST things I thought.

Like if you had 600 yen in your account, and 500 yen in your hand, you could deposit your 500 yen and withdraw a 1000 yen bill (times DO get tough)

I think the reason that are doing away with it is because it clogs easy.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

To avoid accumulating mountains of coins, I keep a little glass bowl in my genkan to hold the change I bring back at the end of the day. Then, when I leave for work the next morning, I put that change back in my pocket and look for ways to use it up during the day. Those annoying coins are a pet peeve of mine.
