Look, Take-man, it's been said to death here already. Some FGs just pick up the eccentricities of the culture after being here for awhile. Crap, whenever I go back to LA, I get all po'ed at the supermarket or 7-11, as they aren't as helpful and don't thank me 50 times and ask me to come again. Still, foreigners living in Japan acting Japanese ain't half as bad as Japanese living in Japan taking hip-hop clothing lessons from the African guys in Harajuku.

Japanese guy: Yo, where you from?
Me: LA.
Japanese guy: Oh, Tu-pac.

yeah.

"Sukiyaki" has got to be the worst song ever recorded. It's just embarassing for me to hear any foreigner singing it.

My two cents.

There is always the possibility that Takechanpoo is actually joking although whether we stand to gain anything by making that assumption is debatable.

Makes perfect sense to me to! :( I suspect in my case, it was to do with spending way too long teaching English in Japan. My big problem is that at times I don't even notice statements like that and hence never correct them.

Take what was the point of the video

Postby canman » Fri Mar 02, 2007 9:12 am

Now I promise not to get emotional or anything, but I really didn't notice anything strange from the people interviewed. They didn't take 10 seconds to answer, they didn't suck air between there teeth while thinking of an answer. So what exactly was the point of posting the video, or are you just amazed that some foreigners were able to communicate.

Postby kurohinge1 » Fri Mar 02, 2007 10:24 am

Takechanpoo, the reason why gaikokujin act like Nihonjin when they speak Japanese is this:

Speaking Japanese, like certain other activities (like eating food with MSG or driving a Toyota) accesses a remote, little-used part of the human brain, called the "umami-nou".

Image

Activating this area (the umami-nou) repeatedly is a little like gradually changing your operating system and certain inevitable consequences will start to emerge.

Patients who have been repeatedly exposed to such activities have been reported to display the following signs:

  • Wearing a neck tie on the head when drunk
  • Trying to operate an umbrella and mobile phone while riding a bicycle
  • Increased overtime worked but decreased efficiency
  • Running the car engine when parked
  • And even moving to live in Japan, in extreme cases.

Treatment must be rendered relatively quickly otherwise the patient may develop permanent loss of functioning of certain parts of the brain, namely, the area they previously used for logical and rational thought - the "gaikoku-nou".

If recovery is no longer possible, the patient is diagnosed as a "Japanophile" and kept in isolation on a small island east of China and Korea.

Hope this helps.

It does not help. That should read on several small islands east of China and Korea!

the text is a little fuzzy to read though i can make out a fair bit of it, but just that pose and background to me rather reeks of religion. it looks like one of those pamphlets the jehovas are constantly supplying me to use in my fireplace.

[quote="Rob Pongi"]Also, Take-chan, notice how the entire brain above has turned slightly yellow, well this is obviously a classic case of the commonly known and terminal, but non-life-threatening syndrome called YELLOW BEAVER FEVER (YBF) which is often found in men of all ages, shapes, sizes and colors from all over the world. YBF, like its sister syndrome found mostly in Asian females, GAIJIN SNAKE FEVER (GSF), currently has no known cure and can only be temporarily controlled by periodic and effective "injections" ]

I'm not sure that Kahl is a Mormon. Japan Today ran a profile of him recently which didn't mention it. That's not conclusive but he seems to have had non-missionary reasons for being in Japan.

I've never heard that he's a Mormon either and can't find anything online that says he is, so he probably isn't.

Hey Captain,

I remember seeing him on a different census day poster in my friend's apartment building.

Anyway, I have trouble watching him on TV. He actually makes me uncomfortable with his out Japping the Japs routine. It really is bizarre to watch. The first time I saw him it was unbelievable.

Sorry guys, I just assumed he was a mormon - the square hair style, the weird japanese dialect (but i guess exchange student can explain that as well as missionary).

But let's just say that if you're a gaijin, and you don't speak standard Tokyo-ben on TV, you're just asking to be ridiculed.

I recall a Mormon gai-tare that is also a lawyer. I don't remember his name, but he might be the one you're thinking of.

I also remember there was a gai-tare that has goofy, coke bottle eyeglasses, but I'm not sure if he is also a mormon and/or if he is the lawyer that I was thinking of in the previous sentence.

i get ridiculed enough for speaking izumo-ben, the last thing i need to do is become the laughing-stock of the nation by doing so on tv.. but hey.. i'm sure i have a price!
