If I was Freud, then I'd say that the Japanese are anally fixated. Anal fixation stems back to childhood, where the young toddler would take pride in the thing that he had "created" and earn his mommy's reward for being toilet trained.

Seems like the Japanese never grow out of this pride in what they create - and have even gone so far as to make what is essentially disgusting and bacteria infested human waste into a cute character.
I expect that kids will be fighting an UNCHI in the next version of Dragon Quest or Pokemon or some other role-playing game.

Oh yeah, and if I remember correctly, Mini Moni made a song about UNKO as well.

Japanese Snack, Karinto
Ingredients:
1 cup all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/3 tablespoons brown sugar
a pinch of salt
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
vegetable oil for deep frying
a skillet

Preparation:
1. In a bowl, sift the flour and baking powder. Blend in the sugar, a pinch of salt egg and milk. Make a smooth dought and roll out super thin on a cutting board. Cut into 1/2 * 1/4 inch thin strips

2. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet 1/3 full to 330F.? Drop the pieces of dought into the oil one at the time, Make sure that they don't stick together. Take the cookies out when they are browned. I usually drain Karintos on a paper towe
