69 Japanese nationals in Solomons confirmed safe after quake

(Kyodo) _ The Foreign Ministry said Monday it has confirmed all 69 Japanese nationals in the Solomon Islands are safe after a strong earthquake which hit the islands earlier in the day. The magnitude 8.0 earthquake devastated parts of the Solomon Islands, killing at least 12 people on three islands and causing serious structural damage, according to reports and the authorities in the South Pacific country.

Why is it when the Japanese media cover an international story they ALWAYS cast it as the Japanese are OK, but oh, by the way, at least 12 poor other folks did not make it? (Don't answer this question, I already know the answer.)

Never fear, our fellow countrymen are safe. I thought the story was that there had been a tsunami. My mistake, it was that 69 japanese were OK.

Yeah, that shocked me the first time I saw it. I remember seeing a big bold kanji headline that said "No Japanese Killed" and then in small print under it, something like "125 People Killed in Plane Crash in Kyrgizbania."
I figure if the world ended today, the Asahi Shimbun headline would read "128 Million Japanese killed."

It happens in the U.S. media also.

Yeah, but at least the "No Americans Killed" is usually the SUBhead, not the main headline.

it happens in all countries as most are self interested, the japanese are the most self obsessed by far, so they are shamless about it and ignorant of how bad it looks.

Just take the US baseball coverage on TV for example....do you ever get a match review or find out which teams won or lost? No only the japanese players that are in the US teams thats the only focus, and its always on.

That's what Canadian media would also report. People are only interested to what happens to their own countrymen. So lay off the Japanese do this and do that because they are racist crap.

The only reason they cover U.S. baseball it's because there are Japanese players. Do you think the average Japanese gives a fucking hoot what U.S. baseball teams do? Maybe as much as what Americans think of Korean soccer matches.

I haven't seen any U.S. headlines that mention the lack of American injuries before the death of the tsunami victims. I'd like to see an example of this if any of you have one. I've only read a handful of reports on this incident, but to I can't even recall the word American or U.S. anywhere in the reports.

No parrots were involved in an accident on the M-1 today when a Lorry carrying high-octane fuel was in collison with a bollard. That's a bollard and not a parrot. A spokesman for parrots said he was glad no parrots were involved.
The Minister of Technology today met the three Russian leaders to discuss a 4 million pound airliner deal. None of them entered the cage, or swung on the little wooden trapeze or ate any of the nice millet seed, yum yum.

That's bull shit Jack. I hear more comments from the young Japanese on the sports coverage being so one sided, then I do from the FGs. I have a lot of young people in my office that are interested in swiming (as well as baseball) and they were really pissed at the coverage of the World Swimming Championships in Australia. If it didn't have a Japanese in it, you didn't see it. In most cases, if the JN was elimated early on, you never saw any more of that event. Of course they watched and rooted for the J-swimmers, but there were some great events they wanted to see and couldn't. I will say that even with that, the Asahi TV coverage of the event was actually better than usual.

As far as baseball goes, I have no problem watching what all the J-players did, but in a lot of cases, especially if their team lost, they won't even say that, so if you follow baseball, you have to go to the web or newspapers to find out the results. The same goes for the j-players in soccer in Europe.

If Canada does the same, that's shitty. BTW, watch out for Toronto this year, they got a powerhouse and should be the team to beat in their division!
