They're not just annoying, they are so torturous to listen to, I want to die.
I always say the damage done by listening to 1 minute of badly spoken Japanese from a student takes 15 minutes of listening to native speakers to repair. But with these videos, I fear the mental damage I sustained can never be undone, and I will take it to the grave.

I don't know what it is exactly that bothers me about them...

I can't stand hearing myself speak Japanese either, but those videos come off as... desperate maybe?

Seems like they are so eager to show off how "well" they speak Japanese or something, although there wasn't anything particularly bragworthy there in my opinion.

More irritating are the YouTube eikaiwa teachers though... makes me shudder just thinking about them.

They all remind me of some of the inaka JET ALTs I used to be surrounded by. The ones who would intentionally ingratiate themselves with whatever Japanese happened to be around (or in positions of authority) and would do things like eat natto regularly, not because they liked it but because it got them more oohs and aahs from their audience (eaten only when there were Japanese around to see them of course).

Ah well, I hope they all enjoy their time in the dancing monkey gaijin spotlight.

I find the presence of anime/manga memorabilia in the background of a lot of these videos to be... interesting.

Although I agree the vids are annoying, you have to give that Emily chick credit for trying to learn the language. Her blog says she's only 18 and lives in a Florida backwater but she's got passion for learning the language and is making do with anime videos and such. Her accent isn't too bad either. That's pretty impressive. I hope she fulfills her dream to go to Japan and learn the pros and cons of living there. Reminds me of myself at that age - I wanted to learn the language badly and also lived in a southern backwater but made the effort and eventually learned it.

I agree. I find myself cringing with embarrassment at some of those videos but that is my problem. English teachers in Japan often say that Japanese learners of English are reluctant to make mistakes and make fools of themselves speaking a different language. When a foreigner tries out their Japanese then they should be encouraged just as we should encourage a Japanese speaker of English. If the problem is what they are saying rather than how they are saying it then they must have made some kind of progress.

My teachers did some extensive research and determined that this is the #1 problem for all language learners: fear. Everyone is afraid of embarrassment when they make mistakes or speak badly.
And perhaps that's what's most irritating about those videos: these people have no sense of fear. We'd die of embarrassment if we sounded that stupid, but they are PROUD of it.

I think the pride is borne of sheer ignorance or immaturity. They just don't know how stupid they sound.

But I still think that Emily's accent is pretty darn good. And she's genuinely enthusiastic about learning Japanese. If more Americans took that kind of interest in learning a foreign language, we might actually overcome our jingoistic tendencies.

Ichiro has been with the Seattle Mariners since the 2001 season, yet he will not speak in a press conference or live interview in English. You would think after having been here 6 years that he would be able to muddle his way through, but he is so fearful of making a mistake in speaking English and "damaging" his reputation as Mr. Perfect, he will only communcate through an interpreter.

I suspect "anime videos and such" are more of a motivation for her "studies" than they are a tool...
