English teachers in Japan often say that Japanese learners of English are reluctant to make mistakes and make fools of themselves speaking a different language. When a foreigner tries out their Japanese then they should be encouraged just as we should encourage a Japanese speaker of English. If the problem is what they are saying rather than how they are saying it then they must have made some kind of progress.

Her blog says she's only 18 and lives in a Florida backwater but she's got passion for learning the language and is making do with anime videos and such. Her accent isn't too bad either. That's pretty impressive. I hope she fulfills her dream to go to Japan and learn the pros and cons of living there. Reminds me of myself at that age - I wanted to learn the language badly and also lived in a southern backwater but made the effort and eventually learned it.

But I still think that Emily's accent is pretty darn good. And she's genuinely enthusiastic about learning Japanese. If more Americans took that kind of interest in learning a foreign language, we might actually overcome our jingoistic tendencies.

You would think after having been here 6 years that he would be able to muddle his way through, but he is so fearful of making a mistake in speaking English and "damaging" his reputation as Mr. Perfect, he will only communcate through an interpreter.
