The ad is a bit comical with rather highfalutin prose (it is not terrible, just overly formal and not natural sounding) and has standard J WW2 two step style/tone of 'yes, bad things happened but not as bad as everyone says/Yes, bad things happened but we weren't the only ones doing it'. "Fact 5" starts out saying the ianfu weren't sex slaves but
a little further it goes"were working under a system of licensed prostitution that was commonplace around world at the time. Many of the women, in fact, earned incomes far in excess of what were paid to field officers and even generals...."
And then a little further, it goes into apology-sounding-but-not-actually-an-apology mode with"Many countries set up brothels for their armies, in fact, to prevent soldiers from committing rape against private citizens."
"Sadly, many women were made to suffer severe hardships during the wretched era during World War II, and it is with profound regret that we contemplate this tragic historical reality."
As it is, if this ad is the best they can come up with, it just makes Japan sound really, really guilty. So rather than smoothing things over, this ad might actually fire things up a bit.
