For those playing at home, depending on how good the sales rep was at selling premium position fee, gross cost of this ad (assuming open general rates) should have been around $114,000 (or $97,000 net after the agency commission) if they made the premium position fee stick or gross $102,000 (or net $86,600 after agency commission) if they didn't opt for pay the fee for guaranteed page location.

The ad is a bit comical with rather highfalutin prose (it is not terrible, just overly formal and not natural sounding) and has standard J WW2 two step style/tone of 'yes, bad things happened but not as bad as everyone says/Yes, bad things happened but we weren't the only ones doing it'. "Fact 5" starts out saying the ianfu weren't sex slaves but
"were working under a system of licensed prostitution that was commonplace around world at the time. Many of the women, in fact, earned incomes far in excess of what were paid to field officers and even generals...."
a little further it goes
"Many countries set up brothels for their armies, in fact, to prevent soldiers from committing rape against private citizens."
And then a little further, it goes into apology-sounding-but-not-actually-an-apology mode with
"Sadly, many women were made to suffer severe hardships during the wretched era during World War II, and it is with profound regret that we contemplate this tragic historical reality."

As it is, if this ad is the best they can come up with, it just makes Japan sound really, really guilty. So rather than smoothing things over, this ad might actually fire things up a bit.

Hey, smelly kimchi dude.
why did you kimchese always end up to foolish conclusion like that?
You ugly Kimchese by all means want to make all of Ianhoo Kimchi baba sex slaves kidnapped by J-army.
But unfortunately in fact, most of Ianhoo Kimchi babas were sold by their own parents or voluntary became by theirself to make money.
And why doesent you sneak Kimchese try to report testimonies of all of 114 kimchi babas in U.S. congress, huh?
Only 4 of 114 Kimchi babas said they were kidnapped.
In present time, we can only say that there were various cases in Kimchi Ianhoo issue.
You ugly sneak Kimchese never try to see everything inconvenient for Kimchiself.
Fuck off, kimchi dude.

Doesn't Chrysanthemum refer to the imperial family and not the entire population of Japan?

Actually not a few Japanese dont want to recognize that originally Tenno family is descendant of gaijin from Peninsula.
But you should distinguish between people in Peninsula in that era and dudes in current Kimchi Peninsula.

The difference is, my dear Mr. Takechinpo, that we don't pretend like we know all the facts. Simply because -

1. So much bullshit has been "documented" already
2. For all sides involved it is in their interest to distort the facts

So unless you were there and know what happened because you saw it happening yourself firsthand, kindly shut the fuck up.

No, I think your Engrish is all fucked up.. you don't get the meaning of "especially" and that doesn't exclude younger fucks... it just highlights the fact that older fucks have more shit-mouth than the younger and it doesn't necessarily hold that young fucks have rose-petal pie holes...

If you are going to talk with foreigners you might want to head over to Nova or Geos for your free one shot lesson. Seeing as you are poor, you might get lucky at your local kouminkan or something like that with a free or cheaper rate.

ChosunIlbo: U.S. Unhappy with Japanese Comfort Women Ad
A source in Washington said on Saturday that the White House and U.S. Congress are displeased by a newspaper ad from 63 Japanese lawmakers that denied the Japanese government and military had a hand in conscripting women from Asian countries as sex slaves for the Imperial Army during World War II. The source said the Bush administration and Congress are likely to address the full-page ad, which appeared in the Washington Post on Thursday. The White House is expected to express its opposition to the ad's claims that several countries set up brothels during the war to prevent soldiers from raping civilians and that the U.S. requested "comfort stations" from the Japanese government after it occupied Japan in 1945.

According to the source, Vice President Dick Cheney, who said on a visit to Japan earlier this year that the historical issue cannot be allowed to disrupt the stability of Northeast Asia, expressed his displeasure with the ad and ordered an investigation into how it was made. The ad is expected to boost the chances that the House will adopt a resolution calling on Japan to apologize to the former sex slaves. Some congressmen are said to be unhappy with the attempt by the Japanese lawmakers to distort historical facts. Rep. Tom Lantos, chairman of the House International Relations Committee, said on Saturday at a fundraising event in Los Angeles that the resolution will be brought up at a regular session of the committee next Tuesday. Lantos said he expected the resolution to pass by a majority.

Interesting. Maybe this will spark an impartial fact-finding discussion that will settle the issue once and for all? If certain Japanese lawmakers want to assert certain "facts", it mandates that they defend the validity of those facts by offering proof and countering alternative arguments.

A source in Washington said on Saturday

Well, that's specific...someone either in DC or the state of Washington said something to someone

According to the source, Vice President Dick Cheney....expressed his displeasure with the ad and ordered an investigation into how it was made.

Even as low as I hold the Bush administration, I think they know how newspaper advertising works...You call up a newspaper, send them some art and copy with a check and a note of when you want it to run and where in the paper to run it. The newspaper then decides if they want to run it or not...Lord knows Haliburton has run enough full page "we're not total scumbags, we feed the troops" ads in the Washington Post.

This piece sounds more like wishful thinking than actual news.

AP: Momentum gains for official Japanese apology on abuse of sex slaves
A newspaper ad denying that Japan's Army drove women into sexual slavery during World War II has increased momentum for a U.S. resolution demanding an official Japanese apology for the abuse, lawmakers say. Lawmakers backing a resolution demanding the apology for the Imperial Army's treatment of women in Korea and other Asian countries during World War II were predicting the legislation will pass overwhelmingly. The ad published last week in the Washington Post by a group of Japanese leaders, including more than 40 members of parliament, convinced many lawmakers to vote for the resolution, said Daniel Kohns, an aide to Rep. Michael Honda, D-San Jose, a Japanese-American and the bill's principal sponsor. "My understanding is that the ad if anything served to garner increased support for the resolution," Kohns said...more...

Get facts straight on comfort women
Gomiuri
The U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee has adopted a resolution demanding an apology from Japan over the so-called comfort women. But the resolution was produced based on an erroneous perception of the facts.

The Japanese government should try to unravel the U.S. side's misinterpretation of history in order to remove a source of future trouble, while in the meantime working to block passage of the resolution by the full House of Representatives.

The resolution calls for the government to accept historical responsibility and apologize for "its Imperial Armed Forces' coercion of young women into sexual slavery." It describes "the comfort women system" as "one of the largest cases of human trafficking in the 20th century."

The resolution was made without verifying the facts and smacks of cheap rhetoric. It makes us doubt the intelligence of U.S. lawmakers.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed "sympathy from the bottom of my heart" and said he "felt sorry" during his meetings with U.S. President George W. Bush and congressional leaders during his visit to Washington in April. The prime minister also said that the 20th century was a century of human rights violations and Japan was not totally blameless.

Abe's remarks did not postpone adoption of the resolution by the lower house committee.

The resolution is merely one of many adopted at the U.S. Congress. It does not have any legal binding force. Thus, some observers say Japan does not have to take it seriously.

Before World War II, there were many women who were put to work as comfort women against their will by parents and brokers. But this does not mean the Japanese military coerced the women.

In past studies, no evidence has been found showing "coercive recruitment of comfort women by military personnel or government officials." The government explicitly presented this observation in March in response to a question by an opposition lawmaker...more...
