I dont mean to be nasty by the thread title, but this is not a small % of the population, IN FACT thats the point really, some people do this in many countries but many others dont, I have noticed and others writing to papers have also, that this seems to be a hobby it is so commonplace 8O not just the odd person does it, its almost ALL cars drivers,

IE: I went to Shimane Pref. once, nice place, and in Matsue City not a big city there were about 30 taxis waiting in a lot in front of the station, very few people around, and when a customer walked up to get a taxi the first taxi in the lot drove out of the lot and up to the the cutomer line.

You know the rest of the story, every single taxi had its engine on, and all of the drivers were standing outside of their car, chatting, some sitting on nearby benches

So dont make this sound like an isolated incident, it happens EVERYDAY, EVERWHERE in Japan and for hour after hour.

If I do just leave as always is the japanese answer for an critical comments made by foriegn people n japan, what then?? this is not about me, its about the environment, conservation of energy, reducing noise pollution, and yes...common sense.

If I go, the problem wont, clearly japanese peolple dont want to hear about problems or solve them. so yes that is fucked.

Its good that many ride bikes as you say, I agree, should be more of it in the west too. But consider, The US/CAN/AUST/UK/NZ in part. are car cultures, but i have never seen idyling like that in those countries.

Japan has a population density greater than any of those countries,......so you would think this would be an issue of concern. :?

I heard of an english guy that passed out leaflets trying to educate idyling drivers.....he was largely met with anger and laughter, as i said it seems foreign people care more about japan than the japanese do.

Gai, as for your typical ignorant predjudice comments, well not reply need other than you dont know my secrets, or anything else by the looks of you posts.

Seems to me that if you choose the car as your mode of transport in Tokyo (and my experience of Japan doesn't go beyond this city), when there are many more hassle free ways to get around then you lack common sense anyway. Should be no surprise that car drivers are mostly idiots. :)

The "leave" solution is not a means of changing the world, but a way to preserve your sanity (as it so obviously pisses you off). An example (off topic), you find eating whales grossly offensive, the people here don't. You knew that before you came here. Did you come here as some sort of crusader, or do enjoy being annoyed?

It looks like you don't know the meaning of the word prejudice. Don't get pissed off because your situation is painfully obvious. Plenty of guys like you in Japan and do you know what? The Japanese don't need pissant comments from imbeciles like you. When it comes to energy conservation the Japanese consume incredibly small amounts of energy in relation to their GDP. If you want to worry about the envirnonment great but you could find a much better place to start than bitching about Japan's incredibly low consumption of fossil fuels. Get a grip man.

I dont know if many of you know this, but most of the taxis are not powered by gasoline.

There is a large LP gas tank in the bank of a lot of taxis. At least in Hachinohe where I lived.

The only taxis that actually NEED the trunk space are the taxis that are going to train stations or airports. So if they ask you where you are going, its to make sure they send you a taxi with trunk space if you are going to an airport or train station.

Otherwise you get a taxi with an LP gas tank.

just a bit of info.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

LPG

Postby blackcat » Sat Apr 12, 2003 12:31 am

true A.O. lpg burns a bit cleaner thats true, adds to overall city temp. though. anyway its many diesel trucks and buses that are the worst culprits.

Ram: I dont enjoy getting pissed of, and if you think some comments that maybe a few hundred people may read on this site are a "crusade" then we are all fucked. I mean i see a problem thats easy to fix, mention it and you and gai are the ones upset.
fuck, ok breathe whatever shit you like. just try not to fuck up the future on the way, as for a small amount of fossil fuels burnt by japan is BS anyway, but if you are too thick not to fix the small problems then you will never be able to taclke Dioxin, and many others.

"The Japanese don't need pissant comments from imbeciles like you. "

Gai, i wouldnt dream of taking your job from you.

anyway ram i think you can see my view, and regardless of my sanity it is not just selfish motives, yes i could go home, but the problem remains......we all breathe the same air!!

i dont think this is a "culture" issue as in Whales,( on that note, If some people want to eat whale, I dont disagee, what i hate are the lies of scientific research which is obviously commercial hunting. :x)

It's a national conspiracy. Whereas other nations choose to fight the implementation of the Kyoto protocol, Japan has chosen a clever way to get around it. Citizens of Japan are doing their bit by artificially inflating current carbon emmissions through activities such as idling their car engines or using smokey kerosine heaters. If the Kyoto protocol is ever agreed to, Japan can instantly comply with their reduction quota. A simple turn of the key nationwide, and hey presto Japan's industry can rest easy in the knowledge that they're unaffected.

Caught the bus yesterday (couldn't be arsed lugging the pushchair up multiple flights of stairs at 3 subway stations), they're pathological engine turner offers. Seems to me if the drivers are instructed to turn the engine off that's what they'll do.

so....

all you need to do is write a letter to environmentalist Gov. Blinky, he'll issue the instructions and all your engine idler induced road rage will be extinguished forever. (just don't tell him you're a foreigner)

Doesn't it take more fuel to start an engine constantly at traffic lights then to just let it idle?

yes it can, but it depends on how long the Idyling is, if its only a few minutes better to leave it on, anything much over 10-15mins KILL it.

esp. for the air.

You are so right..

So, we get fuel-wasting, traffic light ignition flippers AND napping headed snoring CO2 spewers. Typical Japan: 2 birds, 5 stones.

How bout those dusk driving headlightless bicycle killers..

Do they actually LEARN anything by paying $3,000 for a drivers license?

We don't need no stinking applied knowledge..

You written your letter of complaint to Gov Blinky yet?

How about a protest? Hire a really old diesel truck, park it outside the Tokyo Metro Govt building and idle your time away. Or leave the engine going, do a runner, park yourself behind the nearest tree (if you can find one) and watch.

Hate to go forum mining... but I had to interject.

If it's a diesel vehicle (i.e., truck, bus) it's actually more efficient to idle for a few hours than start and stop it.

Less wear on the engine, and better fuel economy. Diesels use almost no fuel at all to idle... a large diesel engine (tractor-trailer / concrete truck / bus) uses something along the lines of 1 gallon / 6 hours in idle, and it doesn't hurt the engine to do it.
