Peter Barakan Attacked With Mace

Postby Mulboyne » Sun Dec 09, 2007 12:45 am

The Asahi reports (Japanese) that broadcaster Peter Barakan was attacked this afternoon at a church in Mita, Tokyo, by a man in a ski mask wielding mace. Barakan was scheduled to give a speech at the church on the theme of peace and was standing at the entrance. Four other people were caught in the attack. The man escaped by car. Barakan has lived in Japan since 1974 and appears regularly on TV and radio.

Well this should be easy to solve. The culprit must be one of the 20 or so foreigners whose fingerprints could not be read by those new machines at Narita!

This guy speaks beautiful Japanese, if I recall correctly. I think I've seen him on some financial programs. Did we cover Peter Barakan on another thread, Mulb?

Solved! Case closed, Columbo, you rock! :p
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

He doesn't seem to have an English wikipedia entry, but he does have a Japanese one:

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%94%E3%83%BC%E3%82%BF%E3%83%BC%E3%83%BB%E3%83%90%E3%83%A9%E3%82%AB%E3%83%B3

If this is the same guy, he seems more about music than finance.

He's popped up a couple of times: you yourself added a piece on him in this thread. He's not a finance guy but he has introduced and discussed a wide variety of CBS documentaries so finance might have been the topic on occasion. NHK seem to regard him as a safe pair of hands.

His resume says that he used to co-ordinate overseas activities for YMO and I've mainly come across him in music contexts. His radio show featured world music but he has a wide range of interests. I've only spoken with him once but he was quite witty and I didn't feel the urge to spray him with mace.

He's British: his father is Polish - quite a few Poles came over to Britain during the war and stayed - while his mother is half English and half Burmese. I don't think anyone would describe him as macho but he's married.

He is a great guy. I have met him on a few occassions and found him to be a quietly spoken gentleman. His wife is stunning and on the one occassion I met her she was in a kimono.

He has been somebody that my brother has respected for a long time. They worked in the music industry together many years ago.

Why anybody would want to mace him is beyond me.

They haven't found the guy yet and Peter Barakan reportedly said he didn't recognize him.

I can only remember as far back as my last three posts. I'm just pleased I half-remembered that he was discussed in another thread.

She co-authored the first Tokyo guide book I ever really used. It is old now - even the revised version in 1996 didn't really bring it up to date. The other author, Judith Connor is the wife of the guy who used to run Baring Securities in Tokyo so they used to give them out to just about anyone. There was always a pile of them in their reception.

After reading a bit about this guy, and hearing what everyone who's met him has to say, who the hell would want to mace this guy? I wonder what he did to piss this person off so?

I SHOULD want to say hello to Barakan-san if I see him coming out of church.
I SHOULDN'T want to mace him and then run away.

I SHOULD want to write Barakan-san a letter telling how much I enjoy his TV appearances.
I SHOULDN'T type the letter on a death certificate.

I SHOULD want to cook Barakan-san a simple meal.
I SHOULDN'T want to cut into him, to tear his flesh, to wear his flesh, to enter unto new worlds to which his flesh becomes the key.

But not if you sense that he accepts the offer telepathically. :p

-the fact that Peter ("Japan's Dullest Quasi-gaijin, with the Possible Exception of that Finnish-born Diet Member") Barakan was the target gives the whole thing an absurdist, What's-the-frequency-Kenneth quality.

Why does the news state that it was a rental car and therefore hard to trace? Harder than a normal car? How could that be? (I see how it could be slightly harder, but not much).

I guess they must mean hard to trace back to the assailant, especially if he used fake ID to rent the car. The fake ID would be pretty hard to make though - they require a driver's license and credit card, usually. (Unless that requirement is just for Gaijin?).

So was this a well-planned hit? Or an impulsive act of violence? I guess we'll find out.

In the blink of an eye, Peter Barakan (inspiration for The A-Team's ass-kicking-est member, B.A. Barakan) will strike your chest, pull out your still-beating heart, show it to you, piss on it, eat it, shit it out, and eat the shit that he just shat out. Then he'll do it again, until it's the hardness of a diamond.

(APNews). Japan's Nation of Islam leader, Louis Barakan was maced outside a church where he was scheduled to give a speach entitled, "My prints are my soul, and you may not scan it". Released shortly after receiving medical attention, the Reverend Barakan offered these words to his assailant, "We have all been maced, my brother. It is in this mace that we can see the true ignorance that oppresses us. I ask thee to turn your mace onto yourself, so that you, too, may see who has oppressed you, my brother. Saalam alekem."
