I think the word "exhaustion" is used here as a euphemism for hung-over. And I think that service would be a great thing to have available after a hard night out on the town.

Hell yeah, especially since it's well known that alcohol depletes your vitamin reserves and, at least in part, that is why you get a hangover (i.e free radical damage). I've taken B & C vitamins to mitigate the damage from too much drinking...I can only imagine that an IV would be more efficacious since the nutrients go straight into your bloodstream bypassing your GI tract.

I've always found how eager doctors here are to hook you up to an IV to be kind of weird. I've had them suggest it for everything from a cold to a backache.

I don't doubt it. Depends what's "in the bag" I guess. I don't trust what doctors say though...I do my own diligence. :)

Almost the only reason I visit the doctor anymore is because my wife nags me into it ("you've had that cold for three whole days now, you'd better go to the doctor!") and it's the easiest way to get her to stop, but other than the dentist I don't usually bother with any medicine or pharmaceuticals (the dentist has a special talent for hurting me to the point I will actually take pain killers) and forego most of the in-office voodoo magic placebo treatments.

I'm just always amazed at how often their suggestion is an IV drip, I can't recall ever having had a doctor outside of Japan recommend of insist on one for anything other than to accompany surgery...

Yeah most doctors only hit the IV to stablize a patient with dextrose or saline as the situation requires. Obviously if one is hospitalized they usually resort to one...but yeah, for outpatient services it is rare to have a doctor order an IV.

I have had an IV vitamin infusion though but that was offered by a phyiscian who wasn't a mainstream allopath.

I've got an idea: eat healthy, drink less, take a multi-vitamin everyday, and skip the IV.

Yeah, I do all those things...but if you were in a fix...a multi-vitamin wouldn't do you right....most multi-vitamins suck actually, and their absorption rate is ridiculously poor.

I just thought the idea was cool in that the place could be visited for an occasional "tune up" so to speak.

You know, I think I had one of these IV shots. My first time over, I caught bronchitis (aggravated by allergies to those damn cedars) and went to a little clinic. I was kind of run down, I figured I'd get some antibiotics to fight lung infection, but they wanted to give me an injection, they described it as a "rejuvenative." I asked them what was in it, they said "it doesn't matter, it's free." Well that's not quite what I asked. So they brought out a like 300ml syringe full of clear fluid and started pumping it into me. Then when that was in, they detached the needle, attached a new syringe and pumped another 300ml in. I figured maybe it was mostly saline, to fight dehydration. But I have no idea what else was in it. It didn't seem to do me any harm (I wish I could say that about the little pills they gave me).

Aw, man. I was all waiting for a punchline...but I guess you never found out what was in it. Oh well.

Well it's not like I didn't try. Doctors in Japan aren't used to patients questioning their treatment. When I asked what was in it, he was uncooperative.
When the little nurse came out with this huge syringe, she asked if I was OK with such a big injection. I guess she must have sensed my discomfort when I saw the huge damn syringe. I called it a "horse syringe" like a veterinarian would use, they laughed. The nurse asked again if I was OK with the shot, and I said, "sure, I'm OK, just do it carefully."
I have no idea if the injection was of any use, but I certainly didn't feel rejuvenated.

Hehe. Fair enough. Guess the patient-doctor relationship is bit different than in the States.

If they added some oxygen therapy, the combination would be perfect for treating hangovers.

Hangover cure-all:
One 375 ml bottle of Coke or Pepsi
Two antacids
Two acetomediphen tablets (causes less stomach bleeding than aspirin)
Two tablespoons of instant coffee.

1. Pour the soda into a glass, stir in the coffee and acetomediphen.
2. Plop in the antacids...plop don't drop.
3. Mix it quickly, down it ASAP while thinking of anything but how bad it tastes.
4. If you don't puke all over the place, you'll be fine (semi-functional) in 30 minutes. If you puke all over the place, you'll be fine (semi-functional) in 45 minutes.

I can't argue with your experience but word to the wise....taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) with likely alcohol still in your system is a really bad idea...you could potentially damage your liver. Acetaminophen and alcohol can create a toxic reaction. Acetaminophen alone is bad enough but with alcohol it can be much worse.

"The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that liver damage may occur with as little as 2.6 grams of acetaminophen (four to five "extra-strength" pills) taken over the course of the day in persons consuming varying amounts of alcohol (NIAAA, Seeff). The damage caused by alcohol-acetaminophen interaction is more likely to occur when acetaminophen is taken after, rather than before, the alcohol has been metabolized."

GOOD POINT 2tricky. I was just looking at my bottle of Tylenol PM the other night and on the label it warned, "If you consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day, ask your doctor whether you should take acetaminophen ... Acetaminophen may cause liver damage." So I QUICKLY put it back in the medicine cabinet.

I included the acetaminophen as I have taken out a rather large life insurance policy on all of you and well....rent is due, so I was just trying to hurry things along, y'know. Don't take it personally, it's just business.

Indeed, Gilligan. Acetaminophen is a far more toxic substance than many people know or recognize. In fact, it's actually one of the leading drugs used for suicide b/c it works so well and it's so cheap and accessible.

My warning wasn't intended to be preachy, just a word of caution.

great, now all those people considering death by inhalation of cleaning fluid vapors have a new way to go ..

Thus far the Japanese have proven to be too inventive to resort to such simple, pedestrian measures.
