I thought he was whinging about how bad his AOL connection was.

LOL! I've kind of given up on that guy because I can't understand what he's trying to say ever.

Perhaps you'll enjoy it - the hostess blogger I linked to did - in which case please stop by again if you have the time and let us know.

I did read Bar Flower, and really enjoyed it actually! I don't think it's fair to say that the foreign hostess character has appeared in other books, therefore this one is redundant. Bar Flower's story is as unique and universal as any good story.

But I get it that people want to dismiss her. Hostesses don't get any respect.

I think it's less him being vague and more you being dense.

Greji's original statement:
She writes she suspects some of the girls might be doing it? I got more time on hostesses than I do on AOL and absolutely none of them have ever been concerned about "beyond the rules", even if they were aware of any rules.

How is that vague? I know Japanese jr. high school English students who could figure out that means he's slept with a lot of hostesses.

More time on (top of) hostesses than on AOL (the internet) = He's fucked a lot of hostesses.

This isn't exactly the dead sea scrolls or anything here.

Greji may be a lot of things, but he's not generally one to beat around the bush (hah!) or exercise unnecessary tact when it comes to discussions about sex. :p

If I had thought it was redundant, I wouldn't have made a point of going along to a bookshop to take a look at a copy. Having read some good reviews, I wanted to see for myself. I'm happy you enjoyed it but I think you can understand why the book might be less interesting for someone who has read and heard several other similar accounts. I enjoy Peter Carey's work but his "Wrong About Japan" was very disappointing and the book's harshest critics are generally people who have lived in Japan. Conversely, I had low expectations for Isaac Adamson's Billy Chaka series and it turned out to be very entertaining. Carey is the better writer but his take on Japan was hackneyed while Adamson's was fresh.

I also think you are barking up the wrong tree in believing anyone giving an honest opinion here is somehow showing a lack of respect for hostesses. I bring one perspective to bear when picking up a book and you bring another which is how it should be.

Yes, that is how it should be, you're right.

So you think Bar Flower is worthy of attention, but you're too evolved and knowledgeable about Japan and hostesses to give it more than a cursory glance. But you wish the author respectfully-but-slightly-patronizingly well. I get it!

You're imputing motives that don't exist. I wish her well because she is living in Japan and making a go of it. It's the same reason to read these forums: most people here are living, or have lived, in Japan and we all come up against similar kinds of challenges and find our own ways to deal with them. It is interesting hearing about other people's experiences in the country whether they are teaching, modelling, studying, hostessing, working in an office or whatever. For me, the Tokyo Weekender is a poor magazine but I admire the work that owner Caroline Pover has put in to build up her business. I doubt I'll ever buy anything from J-List but Peter Payne deserves credit for coming up with the idea and making it a success. Lea Jacobson not only finished writing her book - something that a lot of people say they'll do but often don't - she also got published. Finding a publisher usually involves a lot of rejection so going through all that does deserve respect.

Anyone who "evolves" in Japan - whatever that means - to the point when they think no-one can tell them anything has stopped living. There are a few long-time foreigners with views about the country that seem trapped in amber. On the other hand, someone just off the boat can have an insight which can open your eyes to an aspect of the country you never thought about before. That's one of the reasons to read widely and in that spirit I picked up Jacobson's book. It quickly became apparent that she covers the territory in a fashion I've seen before. There's no Japan snobbishness there: I like George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" but many of the zombie films that followed seemed trapped by the conventions of the genre which gradually developed. It's the same with any genre and, unique individual though Lea Jacobson is, she followed the conventions of the genre she chose. The Publishers Weekly review on Amazon disagrees with that assessment and thinks she rises above them which is why I included it as a counterpoint.

No problem, just let me know when you are too stupid or too intentionally oblique to understand something you don't agree with in the future and I'll be sure to help.

BTW, you've only ever bothered posting on this particular post and only to defend/support the book. Rather passionately as well I'd say. On top of which, unless a mod edited it into your post, there is even a link from you to the book's amazon page.

So do you have some sort of personal interest in this book or are you/ somehow related to the author or something?

I originally got to this forum by googling a cool book that I recently enjoyed. I`d found some great stuff online about it...but then I came here. Here...where the dialogue quickly degenerates into a discussion about feces. Yet against my better judgement, I`ve been looking around. I`m not even sure what fuckedgaijin is supposed to mean, but if I could guess, I`d say it refers to an "insecure western haterman, still living in Asia because the Asians are too polite to tell him he`s a lame prick."

Bye now.

You are new here. You're anonymous. You've only posted in this thread.

You could be the author herself. You could be the author's family member. You could be the author's husband.

If you come into an established community, and start attacking the most prominent and knowledgeable members, anonymously, and without any experience to back up your claims, guess how seriously we'll take you?

So you published the book on consignment and are shopping it around Japan-related sites under an alias?
