It's an old Chinese superstition. I don't know whether it arose independantly in Japan, but I suspect not.

The origin (in China, at least) is that the blind ghosts (which only come out at night, I presume) can follow you by hearing your whistle.

Might I also add about

- The increasing proliferation of 'stand alone' ATM's in the UK that charge up to &pound]www.moneysavingexpert.com[/url] which offers loads of useful advice on things like consumer rights, dealing with banks, and good deals, written by a lawyer.
