Interesting article on ESPN right now. Can't say I'm very surprised. Ichiro didn't seem to upset that the team completely sucked, as long as he got his hits and looked cool in the outfield. I would like to know which player it was. Sexton perhaps? Any ideas?

This could well be a throw off of somebody reacting to the Johjima problem mentioned in posts elsewhere herein.

There is alot of dissention over him, which really isn't Johjima's fault. If you got it, you got it, if you don't shoga nai. Someone may have construed those problems to be Ichiro.

Wasn't Ichiro on the team that won an American League record 116 wins? Yes he was. Ichiro also set the American League singles record during that season. I suspect this is the real reason Ichiro is getting the negative press:

Not completely. The Mariners are on the hook for Ichi's salary of a cool $17,000,000. However if you look at the salary list below, you will see of Mariner "employees" 2 thru 6, they are paying a ton of dough. And out of this bunch, all but one can be considered dead-beats. An argument can be made for Beltre. He is a great defensive player and he does hit "OK". Not great, but OK. All of these guys are signed for 2009!

The cause of the M's situation is the fired Bill Bavasi. He has absolutely no baseball sense and signed most of the M's current roster along with Sexson, Wilkerson and Vidro all "former" Mariners now. Bavasi is now in Cincinnati screwing up the Reds.

And this does not even touch on employee #7, Mr. Johjima, who is pulling down $6,383,333 big ones. Johjima is batting all of .223 this year. Yikes! And the M's signed him to a 3-year extension this season at the behest of the Japanese ownership, as the story goes. Reports have it that some of the M's pitchers do not like to throw to him.

Ichiro gets on base, does make good plays in the outfield (good plays, not highlight reel plays) and he brings in thousands of Japanese baseball fans. Trading him might be a consideration, but the loss of Ichiro would be a big PR hit for the M's who are VERY sensitive to public opinion. The Mariners need to win 2 of 3 against the A's this weekend just to reach 60 wins, have clinched the worst record in the AL (even worse than the Orioles), and are battling the Washington Nationals for the worst record in the majors.
