The traces of the harmful chemicals are thought to have leaked from four glass bottles that were found at the site in Hiratsuka. The Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport and Kanagawa Prefecture officials announced the discovery on Friday.

The bottles, some of which were sealed and some of which were broken, were unearthed by workers on April 3.

A Hokkaido man admitted in a videotape made shortly before his death that he dumped Imperial Japanese Army munitions filled with poison gas into Lake Kussharo immediately after the end of World War II, The Yomiuri Shimbun learned.
Following recent reports on illnesses caused by such munitions in Kamisumachi, Ibaraki Prefecture, the Environment Ministry earlier this month started a nationwide survey on toxic substances held by the former Imperial forces.
