Now Ishihara is blaming backroom deals for Tokyo's loss. I thought that Japan was the master of backroom dealing. That the whole Nagano games was based on promises and side deals made. Now he states that Brazil promised to buy fighter jets from France in return for their vote. He also felt that Hatoyama's speech was much better than Obama's speech. I think they both made decent speeches, kudos to Hatoyama for making it in English, even though he was criticized on Japanese TV tonight for carrying a copy of his speech when he made it. I mean give the guy a break, he just returns from the UN and G20 meetings, and then jets off to Copenhagen to make another speech in English, I think it was ok to have a cheat sheet.

Bust was criticized every minute of his administration(some of it rightfully so)but when ANY individual disagrees with Obama or has questions about his policies, you are either a racist, bigot, out to get him, not letting him do his job and frankly, people are getting real tired of it. Not only Conservatives. FOX is not the problem, Obama had the all of the American media, outlets especially MSNBC in his pocket, if CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, Univision, the NYT, LA times etc. and "one" network actually, asks legitimate questions and concerns about his policy? That makes them out to get the President?? The people are giving him a chance, but he needs to take care of serious issues at home. Besides, we had the Olympics quite a few times, I'm quite content that Brazil got the Olympics, it's about time Latin America got them. Also, Chicago had the least amount of votes and didn't even make it to the second round. What does that say. Obama went there for nothing.
As mentioned, I think Rio was the best choice but this infatuation with Obama traveling to pitch for his country is silly. Who cares! Do you think Brazilians were whining when da Silva planned to show up in person for his country?

I did think Oprah going was goofy though. The Brazilian president showed up with Pele!

One of Japan's few high profile bloggers, Nobuo Ikeda, has written(Japanese) that Brazil must be adept with back-room bribes to have been awarded both the Olympics and the World Cup. I don't much like Ishihara but I got the impression he was being more realistic than critical. He seemed to be saying "this is the game and we need to learn how to play it better if we want to win". In the past, it seems like all you had to do was put the right amount of cash in a brown envelope and you had your vote. Japan could do that because they used to be willing to spend more than most. Now, however, a bit more subtlety is required and you have to be prepared to play a longer game.

I don't have any difficulty with Obama turning up to support Chicago's bid. Tony Blair flew to Singapore to support London's bid in the 2005 vote even though he had a G8 meeting looming. It's widely thought that his presence had a major impact on nudging London ahead of the favourite Paris in the final vote. After that experience, the IOC seemed to send the message that if your national leaders don't support a bid then you may as well give up. For that reason you can't compare how cities went about bidding in the past because the stakes have risen, at least for now.

The kerfuffle about Obama's trip is rooted around two factors....one group is simply overjoyed to see him fail due to pathological dislike (while every president has this group of people, Obama's is far more well organized and better at keeping the hardcore nutballs out of the limelight, although some still slip through ) and another, larger group, that simply thought it was rather unseemly for a US president to do this sort of thing, or at least, to do this sort of thing and then LOSE. Had been it been successful, there would have been some grumbling but no more than the standard from the usual suspects. But the fact that he flew to another country to deal with a bunch of unelected bureaucrats/criminals and still got nothing for it just make the US look weak and blows away the mirage of US international exceptionalism that more than few US folks are still quite fond of.

Personally, I think it was a bit much given there are far more important matters here at home AND it looks pretty bad as pure favoritism for his home town, which is also pretty unseemly for an US president to overtly engage in.

Personally, I think it's stupid for a head of state to waste his time on something as retarded as the Olympics. However, if Obama hadn't gone, the douche-bag right would be blaming him for not going and securing a win for Chi-town. Fuck Rush, fuck FOX, and fuck the Republicans.

Don't you think in all honesty that that sentiment runs both ways? You can say the same the left about MSNBC(More Stupid Nauseating Barack Coverage) about Olbermann, the NYT, the crap Carter spews and how the left constantly wanting to inject race into everything. Well, at least you don't hear that much from Sean Penn these days.

Chicago loses Olympic bid

Postby Adhesive » Mon Oct 05, 2009 1:00 pm

Perhaps the Chicago and Obama discussion should be split into a different thread so that we can reserve this one for congratulating Brazil and posting the appropriate pictures/videos of sexy Brazilian chicks?

That being said,

canman wrote:I guess the right wing will be out with the long knives blaming Obama for the loss to Rio.

Seems even some libs are prone to bipartisanship:

Chicago torpedoed by anti-U.S. sentiment? :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Chicago 2016

Some Chicago officials say anti-American resentment likely played a role in Chicago's Olympic bid dying in the first round Friday.

President Obama could not undo in one year the resentment against America that President Bush and others built up for years, they said.

Oh, believe me, I know the Democrats are a bunch of hypocritical twats too. I just have a lot more to say about the Republicans because I was a strong supporter until the scumbag Bush administration took the greed, corruption, cynicism and cronyism to a new level.

Anyway, I agree with Adhesive that his thread should be focused on what Brazil has to offer the world.

Sadly, I would have to agree that we live in a shitty decade for music as Eminem is the No1 selling "artist." Other close calls are Britney Spears, n*sync?, backstreet boys?, etc.

I put them in question because I don't know if they are still around. I stopped listening to the mainstream crap a long time ago but I loved n*sync before they got all big and famous.

I wasn't disagreeing with Ketou but that song is about 15 years old, so it's not really an example of the shit being put out since 2000.
