Checking further into this story (I live nearby), the museum turns out not to be a place for a spontaneous fun visit. According to the the official website of the JAL Group - Safety Operations...
[floatl]Image[/floatl]
....The center is open to all those with an interest in aviation safety. Visits can be made by members of the general public. However, reservations are required and should be made the day before the intended visit, so as not to conflict with staff-education days and for reasons of site security. The center offers daily one-hour guided tours for groups of up to 10 people at 10:00, 11:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00. Safety Promotion Center staff will accompany visitors at all times during visits and explain the facilities and exhibits...more...

JL123 accident is starting to become an annual celebration holiday in Japan.

Ironically, that flight number is still being used for the coochie flight to Cochi (no, not that shitty US handbag brand ;) )

I can't possibly go to Japan anymore and not visit this place... thanks for the heads up!

If you go in your professional capacity, you'll get the red carpet treatment and an engrish speaking mega-babe no doubt: Count me in! (Hanada is 15 drive from my house.)

Remember that there are two separate air crash museums in Haneda, JAL and ANA (affiliate Air DooDoo).

You reckon they'll send a limo to pick me up from Shinagawa shinkansen?

Just kidding... you know my propensity for J-airplane museums, we should definitely hook up when we go there. Not sure though when I will be back in J-land, but I'll keep you posted!

This is awesome.. Have to check me out some fear and loathing.

It reminds me of the scene in the movie Airplane! when they were watching a jumbo jet crash landing during the in-flight movie. I searched, but couldn't find that clip. :(

I thought they never showed airplane movies on an airliner (e.g. ones with crash scenes in them) but when I flew ANA earlier this year (maybe late last year..forget...) they were so proud of their movie "Happy Flight" that showed all ANA staff and how well they worked together in times of crisis such as when they had to turn back when a problem occurred. I have no fear of flying but being in the exact airplane (type) on the exact airline company shown in the movie did not exactly inspire me to use them again....

They had Snakes on a Plane on my last trip to Japan... That said, I slept right through it, plus there was plenty else to watch too.
I think a museum like that is a great idea.

I was looking for a hotel to spend my 12-hour layover at LAX next Sunday and I found this museum.

The Flight Path Learning Center is a museum located on the 3500 acre airport property, and was formerly known as the "West Imperial Terminal." This building used to house some charter and regularly scheduled flights. It sat empty for 10 years until it was re-opened as a learning center for LAX.
The center contains information on the history of aviation, several pictures of the airport, as well as aircraft scale models, flight attendant uniforms, and general airline memorabilia such as playing cards, china, magazines, signs, even a TWA gate information sign.
The museum claims to be "the only aviation museum and research center situated at a major airport and the only facility with a primary emphasis on contributions of civil aviation to the history and development of Southern California".

A film based on the 1985 JAL crash has just now been released. Called Shizumanu Taiyo, it stars Ken Watanabe and took a long time to put together because of opposition from JAL.
