All of these ideas about how warm and fuzzy Buddhism is that a lot of people in the West have are bullshit. It's just another shitty exploitative power structure.

Although my argument wasn't about the intended benevolence of the religion (but about the required level of exclusivity), I don't really think the Dalai Lama is really using the religion to build a vast structure for power/wealth/bitches seeing as how he's just sitting around in The Most Remote Place In the World (Tibet), praying and meditating.

Then again, Buddhism is kind of like an Asian version of Scientology. Founded by some dude who lives in the middle of nowhere in order to find 'enlightenment,' people (meaning, celebrities) give up time, money, etc in order for spiritual guidance...and on the local level, people are making a killing on funerals, bereavement therapy, and...merchandise.

Except for all the lawsuits, murder, cover-ups, and political maneuvering.

He isn't actually. He fled to India in 1959 after a failed attempt to retake Tibet from the People's Republic of China, who took control of it in 1951. He's now head of the government-in-exile in Dharamsala, India.

He certainly hasn't been sitting around at home and meditating, either. Up until he announced his semi-retirement in 2008 he constantly toured the world speaking on Tibet and Buddhism.
