[floatr]Image[/floatr]KIPPO: A Briton particular about making miso soybean paste
I arrived five minutes early for an appointment to interview a man from Britain. It is said that British people are strict with time. When I was strolling past the gate of an office building in Osaka City to kill time, a tall foreigner showed up, saying in Japanese, "Ano (Excuse me)..." He was Anthony Flenley, 56, president of Osaka Miso Jozo Co. that manufactures miso (fermented soybean paste) and the man I was scheduled to meet..."So you would like to know our method of making miso?" he said as he proceeded to tell me coherently about the manufacture of the traditional Japanese seasoning. "We mature it slowly in conformity with changes in natural temperatures. It's a natural way of brewing"...He married a Japanese woman while she was studying in Britain. "The parents of my wife own this company," Flenley said. "They had two children, both daughters, and asked me one day if I could take over the family business...It was in September 1990"...more...

Good find Mulboyne! I've known Tony for a few years, he's a great guy. Can't say I've ever seen him looking like that photo 30 seconds in, I'll ask him about next time we have a beer. ;)

The guy's English sounds a bit weird. I guess too many years in total immersion.

I've met quite a few British guys who have strange English after living in Japan for a while. Partly it's because Japanese usually understand an American English accent so you can find yourself changing it until you find the right frequency. When I got back from a stay in Tokyo some years back, my friends thought I sounded Canadian. It didn't actually sound anything like a Canadian accent but it had stopped being an English accent and yet clearly wasn't American either. That was a nasty shock. Some people seem to be able to hold their accent no matter where they are.

On top of that, you've got the other problems which people have brought up before on FG. Your vocabulary goes to the dogs and you use different facial muscles to speak Japanese. Your mouth forgets how to make some sounds in English if you don't speak it enough.

I think the internet has probably helped moderate those problems for long-termers in recent years. There's no shortage of English material to read, watch or listen to on the web which can help you stay current. Also, services like Skype mean that phone calls home can be a regular occurence rather than a wallet-busting occasional event. It's also easier to get in touch with other gaijin, even if you are out in the sticks, and there are a lot more of us around these days too.

I went to see Dylan tonight with Tony and some other friends. This video came up in discussions when we were all out drinking after the show and we all had a good laugh about the "Porn mustache". :p

anyone know of a good source for french books? was looking up titles on amazon.fr so i could grab the isbn numbers to key into amazon japan but it's not returning results like it does when i grab them from amazon.com. was hoping to save on shipping.
