I'd say that Omega and Rolex are probably the top selling "expensive brand" Swiss watches in Japan.

Rolex is popular among oyajis.

The younger guys get Tag Heuer.

Personal I would get a Tag as they are more accurate.

dont know where omega fits.

But I agree with Taro. Less and less people buy them for practical use.
They are just a fashion accessory and not a practical product.

I find watches useful for business meetings when my schedule is tight. I can't really look at my cell phone when speaking with a client but I can glance at my watch.

The Swiss watch industry is pretty tightly interconnected.

Swiss-made watches from many companies (Omega, TAG Heuer, Breitling, and many more) that are priced under about $5k (and even many up to $10k) are all based on one of a very few 3rd party movements made by ETA. Each company adds its own customizations to the movements but the core movements are the same.

This isn't such a bad thing, ETA make some very good stuff. Their 2892 is very good and is used in many watches. Having standardized parts helps keep the watches at a more "affordable" price. In-house movements are very expensive to design, test, produce, and then maintain. I think Rolex still produces all their own movements which is one reason why even their base model automatic watches are quite a bit more expensive than a basic Omega or TAG.

What I really don't understand are people who pay crazy-high prices for quartz watches...

I basically agree except for special cases like a 1000 M Seiko diver or other special-purpose quartz watch.

There are always exceptions. I wonder how many people who buy that Seiko diver actually use it for diving though...

I used to buy moderately priced watches but I found that the rainy season effectively destroyed them in about three weeks. Over the past five years, every watch I bought has that Daiso seal of quality. It must be the asbestos or cadmium in the straps, but I have never had one of them rot.

If you plan on doing business with certain wealthy Chinese or Middle Eastern types, you'd better have an expensive watch or no watch when you see them for the first time. A colleague of mine nearly ripped my arm off trying to get rid of the cheap Swatch she spotted on my wrist as we were heading up in a lift to a meeting a few years ago.

What would an acceptable watch be in those circles? I suspect something $20k+?

I generally go for "no watch" but do have a vintage Longines, probably worth no more than about $2,000, which will apparently pass muster, especially if I can somehow drop into the conversation that it belonged to my grandfather. I have a habit of losing watches, though - which is why I used to buy cheap ones - so I prefer not to wear it regularly.

What you got against English teachers Joe? The fact that most of them talk like Yankees bother you?

I couldn't find any Omegas or Rolexes, but the prices on the Hamiltons and Luminox watches were pretty damned good:

They also have this for specials: http://dailydeal.countshop.com/

Tokyo Joe's got a lot of love for the english teachers out there in Tokyo land, you should listen to how they can make it big in Japan and be real successful, but it is true that a lot are noobs in the field of life compared to some of the more educated and established folks here in T Town, and they make mistakes like wearing swatches and such.

Philip Patek and Movado for me though... yes friends, mechanical and quartz - they each have their place - if you get the right look and brand.

Would my Suunto qualify simply because they are so badass?

Suunto makes great (probably the best) dive watches but I wouldn't wear it to a cocktail party or a business meeting. It is more of a computer than a watch to wear..

I ended up getting the Tissot Sea Touch because it had all the features I need plus a few extras like thermometer and a compass.
