I thought the GE turbines were not related to the Fukushima plant?
They are just to make electricity so we don't have power shortages.

Agreed. Hopefully that's not the case and it is still functional. I definitely don't want to succumb to alarmist tendencies at this point.

Well FGers,

After one strong aftershock too many and with all the uncertaintly about the reactors, I decided to pack up and fly to Seoul last night. I'm staying with some friends at least through the three-day weekend. We'll see what happens after that.

Fortunately for me, my boss is letting me work remotely for now.

The reactors didn't fail. The cooling system did, because in a wanton act of hubris TEPCO positioned the diesel generators which were an essential safeguard, in the most vulnerable place possible, most likely for the conveniece of easy unload of fuel via the port facilties.

S.Korea to provide boric acid to Japan

The South Korean government says it will provide Japan with boric acid to help avoid criticality at the quake-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

South Korea's Ministry of Knowledge Economy said on Wednesday that it has decided to provide 53 tons of boric acid, following the request made by Japan.

That amount would include almost all the substance available in South Korea, excepting a quantity for domestic use.

South Korea will send one kilogram of sample boric acid to Japan on Wednesday, to check if the South Korea variety can also be used at the Japanese power plant.

I believe you're correct. The gas turbines are being provided to make up for the lack of power generation resulting from the crippled nuclear reactors.

Just received a shaky phone call from the Aichi crisis cell manager for french expat in Japan... Asking me 2 check the ambassy web site to have news aboot the current event...

"(...) nope... i'd rather that source of information "

[mental note: ok, not the time to be an asshole]

"ok but if you want to leave, Air France is sending planes, 2 of them left from Tokyo yesterday"

[facepalm]

[embarassing silence]

"and 1 will leave from Osaka tomorrow"

"no thanks, if moving out i'd rather go south than stay in northern hemisphere"

Well, that's cute... they called... Is it how things should be managed ?
we are at T+5 days after the start of nuclear accident.
They didn't send any email before.
The first thing they did is closing shop until the 16
On the 17, they ask if I want to hitch a ride on planes already scheduled.
(instead of... counting how many people want to leave and then scheduling planes)

You should have just lied and said that you have been sent to SKor to assist in the shipping of boric acid to Japan. You'll be jealous when we're all of us who stayed have neon green piss and you're stuck with the dasai yellow stuff.;)

But the J-media will likely conveniently ignore that and keep pushing the "reactors designed in gaikoku" story.

Thank you Australian Government.

Quote taken from the middle of an e-mail from them:
"What do I do?
Australians remaining in Japan should follow any protective measures
recommended by the Japanese government. This may include evacuation or
shelter in place orders.
Australians remaining in Japan should not travel to the exclusion zones.
ARPANSA and the Chief Medical Officer advise that iodine prophylaxis is
only required when exposed to substantial radiation doses. It is not
considered necessary for Australians remaining outside protective action
zones.
What are the symptoms of radiation exposure?
Radiation health effects are related to the magnitude and duration of
exposure. Low level radiation exposure produces no physical symptoms. There
is no specific test available for low level exposure and no treatment is
required.
Australians in Japan may find http://www.mofa.go.jp/ an helpful English language
website with local information."

U.S. shows growing alarm over Japan nuclear crisis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States showed increasing alarm about Japan's nuclear crisis on Wednesday and urged its citizens to stay clear of an earthquake-crippled power plant, going further in its warnings than Japan itself.

The State Department said the United States has chartered aircraft to help Americans leave Japan and had authorized the voluntary departure of family members of diplomatic staff in Tokyo, Nagoya and Yokohama -- about 600 people.

"The State Department strongly urges U.S. citizens to defer travel to Japan at this time and those in Japan should consider departing," it said.

As operators of the Fukushima plant tried to douse overheating reactors, U.S. officials warned about the risks of getting anywhere near the area and relied on their own officials for details about the danger.

"The situation has deteriorated in the days since the tsunami and ... the situation has grown at times worse with potential greater damage and fallout from the reactor," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.

Is that the case? I must have misunderstood then.
I couldn't see any way that gas-turbine generators that would fit on a cargo plane would be able to supplement city power requirements.

We went out to eat in Kaihin Makuhari last night, and you could see pretty scary-looking fissures in the ground (all "reclaimed" land). If you have the misfortune of owning a condo in a place like Odaiba, Shin-Urayasu, etc, wait about six months and then sell the mofo for whatever price you can get: when the Big One hits Kanto, the liquefaction wipe-out will look a lot like the scenes from up north.

Mrs. Omae Mona doesn't even like us visiting places like Odaiba for that reason. When we do visit anyway, she always points at the high-rise condos and says "they're going to be the first to die". Not sure if this is based on fact or not...

Yeah, I have a friend with a house at an odd angle in Shin Urayasu... Lots of liquefaction changes in the level of the ground. It's quite a mess.

My house in Osaka isn't on reclaimed land but the land is definitely softer than I would like. I hope to move within the next couple of years and wherever I end up building it will be on top of bedrock...

A lot (all?) of the bayfront land in Chiba from Chiba Minato all the way up to Urayasu is reclaimed land. The Inage-kaigan area is also damaged from what I've heard. The Cosmo oil refinery that went up in flames might also be on reclaimed land.
