MEXT - Next to Worthless

Postby cstaylor » Tue Mar 22, 2011 8:08 am

Anyone else trying to get time-worthy information out of the MEXT site?

[Japanese]
http://www.mext.go.jp/

[English]
http://www.mext.go.jp/english/radioactivity_level/detail/1303986.htm

I can understand maybe a few hours delay, but except for historians a 12 hour delay is worthless. :wall:

My understanding of remote monitoring sites is that they are often not connected to the net and that workers often have to go out and physically do the measurements. This may account for some of the delay. Generally, however what the graphs seem to indicate to me is that unless you are in Ibaraki or Fukushima you probably don't have much to worry about. The blowing up of the #3 reactor seemed to result in a spike of about twice background in Kanagawa so I can't see anything this getting much worse than that.

I've been getting most of my radiation readings from here (http://www.city.yokohama.lg.jp/kankyo/saigai/), which is updated every 3 hours, but it doesn't include water samples. It's the water that has me worried now (although the counts are currently very low, 0 would feel better).

Depends largely on the source of your water supply. If it is groundwater than it will be months or even years before there is any noticable effect. Dams and other surface water is more immediately effected depending on the capacity of the dam and the total volume of water being used, so that may take weeks to show up.

Then how are the numbers rising so quickly in affected areas? :?:

I don't know the specifics about how and where Tohoku gets it's water supply but if you are talking about water used for agricultural purposes it is often transported by a surface network of canals and channels so that the effect of radiation would be much quicker.

Yeah, the news is unclear about it. Last night on the news they showed a running tap pouring into a glass when discussing drinking water contamination, which would suggest the tests are being run at the tail end of the sequence and not at the holding reservoirs.

I thought water purification would be handled before it arrives at a residence. :puke:

Maybe a silly question...

Postby cstaylor » Tue Mar 22, 2011 6:03 pm

But with those ocean numbers coming out of Yokosuka, I wonder what that will do to coastal fishing? :puke:

I wonder how much of those numbers are because of the USS George Washington?

None.... we aren't in port.... Plus it's not like my ship is oozzzing radiation all over the place. We are a hell of a lot more saftey restricted and regulated then all the plants in Japan.

Is that more safety restricted and regulated than the USS Houston?

Not a thing! You just won't have to cook any fish you catch. They'll already be broiled.....

Being a snipe, you probably soak up everything before it could hit the wake, right? (Sorry mate. You know us airdales could never let that go pass. Just couldn't resist it)

Well I got some red snot on my comment. I would like to know who it was. Please don't be shy. I just wanted to know why I am a fool. That's all. BTW, I am an Avionics Technician. So I am good with the soaking up the radiation here on board.

Shit, is that all they want? I was getting nervous that they might start asking for a loan or something.
