Repairing cars at home in Japan is "illegal"

Postby Kanchou » Mon Jun 06, 2011 4:43 pm

I have just been told that it is illegal to repair your own car in Japan. How much of this is bullshit?

My supervisor decided on his own that I shouldn't be allowed to repair the brakes on my own car, and he told me "seriously, no joke, it's illegal to repair cars in Japan." (with that wording)

I'm fairly sure it's illegal to receive money to do it without a SEIBISHI license, but I think he's just trying to force his will on me.

Tell him it's illegal to suck a subordinate's dick, but you'll make an exception in his case.....

Actually, I know the type as you describe him. I just would not mention the topic again and talk around it if he tries to bring it up. It is the typical lose-lose situation with those type of clowns. If you need to continue working with this eunoch, watch your conversation closely and try to limit it to work related stuff only....

Father in law, who is a shop manager at a large dealer, says "as long as your car passes inspection (shaken) you can do anything you want to it".

Exactly what Wuchan said. And you can renew shaken on your own, (that's what we did too here) which I think most of the Japanese usually don't. Maybe your supervisor do not know this.

Edit: took out the word "apply" ( but for sure "renew" shaken on your own is a yes.)

Basically you are not allowed to have a car non compliant with the road and traffic laws.

This compliancy is determined at the time of the shaken...

There is no restriction in the road and traffic laws aboot the qualification needed for the person who present the car to the shaken, who perform repairs, maintenance, or upgrade.

The road and traffic law recommend having tools on board to perform fix or repairs in order not to be stranded on the side of the road. (albeit doing an engine swap on the emergency lane of the highway is not advised)

you got it.

A lot of guys, and a few girls, I know have two engines for their cars. One for everyday/weekend driving, heavily modded, and another just for shaken. Kei builders often go as far as having two cars because kei cars don't have that annoying "button" on the rear license plate. J-police NEVER check VIN numbers unless your car is stupid loud or you have some retarded bosozoku mods.

Boss-san is just being a typical J-robot who doesn't know anything about anything. except how to make his wife unhappy, and do things CHANTO,which means paying through your ass at a dealership and not taking the initiative of spending 2 hours of your life with some spanners/wrenches and doing it yourself. Like the other people said...you can do anything you want.

If you installed a bunch of 500W loudspeakers on top of your car, I'm pretty sure the police would put a stop to that, right?

I first read this as "I am Greji!"

Which, to people who've heard of him, would certainly carry a lot more weight. And to those who haven't, it would confuse the shit out of them.

So, win-win.

Yeah, but only because 500W wouldn't be loud enough...

Yeah...the only thing to top that would be if they made it illegal to stop something like that...
