If I built the exact house I built here in say... Walpole MA, it would have cost me half of what I paid in japan.

It's laminated knotty pine. The entire frame of the house is the same lumber. If you want to cry about "it must be a low end company" you will be wrong, it was built by one of the five mega j-corporations. If you truly know about Japan you will know which company I am talking about.

The floors are a similar joke compared to the US:

If you look closely you will notice that these are not full length boards, in the US they would be eight foot continuous boards. Here they are a series of six inch boards glued together into eight foot sections. My best guess is the company was trying to hide the blemishes. And if you are wondering, the entire house (except baths and kitchen) has SOLID oak flooring.

the argument that jack is using: "the best lumber goes to japan" simply does not work. The best lumber in the world either goes to royal households or is used in the restoration of victorian houses. What jack is personally claiming sounds like Cambridge MA victorian, without pics we will never know. Also, without pics he appears to be full of shit as usual. I am sure that some top quality lumber makes it here but ALL?, no fucking way. Jack is trying to say that there is ZERO top quality lumber available in North America because "it is ALL sent to japan". My house was built by a company that owns a forestry company using the best materials available in japan. The quality of the lumber does not even come close to what I have personally seen in restored victorian homes back in the US.

Scream until you turn blue it will not change what is factual: the best of everything goes to Japan. Turn blue, purple or whetever fucking colour you want. That fact stands. A friend of mine is having clothing made in China but he is buying the fucking fabric in Japan because he can only get that quality fabric there. If he was a large volume user, which he is not, he could have the supplier ship directly to his contractor factory in China but until he gets big, he has to buy it in J-land.

Before my wife set up her clinic, she worked part-time for a clinic in Soga. The owner was the stereotypical neega-rich, yen-grubbin' doc you read about. One time we were out to dinner with him and his snack-mama-looking wife, and he started talking about how he likes Italian cars (he's got a Ferrari), but she likes German cars (she drives a Porsche). I told my wife afterward that we better save our money, because that kind of conspicuous consumption is going to put doctors on the Finance Ministry's shit list, and by golly, things have been getting tighter for J-docs ever since. A pharm MR is taking us to dinner on Friday; they won't even be allowed to do that after this month (and the days of running into greji at fancy-schmancy Tokyo hotels paid for by pharms are looong gone).

Last clothing shopping with my wife was... I don't remember when... now she buy everything from Cecile (even shoes ffs) If it don't fit it goes to the recycling center, if it's ugly... she don't care since she's wearing it only in the car between pijama at home and operation gown at work... Hopefully I'm dere to spend some money...

Meanwhile... I overslept my cats for 2 days straight... If they could talk they'd call me a wanker... (no seriously... feeling incredibly low on energy these days... have stuff to do but fall asleep at the keyboard...)

she could, in theory, do what the koreans here do. The "company" owns everything; cars, houses, cell phones, and all utilities, expenses and liabilities associated with each property. They then pay themselves a moderate wage while the "company" takes most of it back by charging "rent" or "user fees". These guys just keep the money traveling in circles so that it can never be taxed. All purchases are paid for by the company as a "benefit". Grocery shopping? company card. New Air Jordans? company card. BMW M5? company car. Yearly pay on paper is about 3million en but in real life they live like they earn closer to 10-20 million en.

One I know was a bit of a bad kid back in the states. Never finished highschool, did drugs, got in some trouble with the law and hid out in mexico for a while. He got sick of the whole deal and asked his father if he could come here and work for the family company. One problem, he is not japanese so the visa would be difficult to impossible to get, right? Nope! Daddy made him CEO on paper to get an investor visa. So today he lives in japan with his mexican wife, works three days a week and now has a more comfortable life that he could ever have back home. The funny thing is he never ever has any cash, daddy gives him a small allowance which he spends on the wife.

The fact that you can pay for ****** purchase in cash at the local combini is also a godsend... I think there is also some insurance tricks to help in this domain. Dadinlaw never fully repaid some of the money he borrowed to build the clinic making paiement as small as possible for some insurance reason. (insurance tied to the credit or something). I don't really understand the real motive, only that i'm 300% sure that it could be repaid entirely on the spot if it was needed since he's not exactly spending much money on anything either so his last idea not to let money rotting in the bank is to buy shares from Meitetsu. For now we just have 1 free yearly transport card but he's aiming for a second one soon... The more share you own the more little stuff like this you get, it cost them nothing but it's quite awesomly cool to know that you can go anywhere by meitetsu train/bus for free... Or as my german teacher was saying (the communist... and contagious... one) "money only goes to money". Which is in fact nauseatingly true...
