Does stealing pay and benefits=dishonesty?

Postby Bobby Sticker » Mon Dec 05, 2011 4:56 pm

Can any fucked gaijin shed a little light on this point for me?

Over the years in Japan I have noticed that Nihonjin are eager to point out on any occasion that allows for it, how honest their fellow Japanese are. At the same time I have had the good fortune to know a great many fucked gaijin living in Japan, most of whom worked in the ESL business for lack of any better opportunity.

As often as I have heard Nihonjin boasting about Nihonjin honesty, I simultaneously have heard how often the labor laws are violated, benefits are denied, unemployment insurance denied and final paychecks are withheld from my fellow fucked gaijin all in violation of labor laws on the books. Now having been the victim of this myself on many more occasions than I would care to have experienced, I find myself wondering if violating labor laws doesn't count against the perception that Nihonjin are honest?

Is it just fucked me or could there be something like wishful thinking going on or even heaven forfade, denial, in the minds of Nihonjin boasting about Nihonjin honesty OR am I in need of a serious setting straight. If so have at it please.:D

Unfortunately (or fortunately if you're an employer) most Japanese just take it in the ass and get violated because even though it's technically against the law, they feel they will get the same treatment at every company and fear any trouble speaking up would bring them. Call them out and enjoy :winka:

Read them. Meh. Really, it all boils down to:

Nihonjin: "We Japanese..."

FG: "You Japanese..."

Nihonjin: "Hey, don't say 'you Japanese'! We're all individuals, and you can't lump us together like that."

Takeaway: Japanese like to generalize about themselves when it suits them. But only then.

it's denial. I went to a bar with my Japanese friend and they sign said Japanese only. He denied it was racism and said it was due to language issues. I pointed to the sign and he denied what it said many times (No no it MEANS Japanese language only)

Fast forward 3 months to a new bar we frequent and I was not allowed in (only allowed in with my friend) and my Japanese friend said oh it's not a race thing and when I said yes it was he said well the owner can do what he wants and it's a language issue.

JUST BE CAUSE
For the sake of Japan's future, foreigners deserve a fair shake
These past few columns have addressed fundamentally bad habits in Japanese society that impede positive social change. Last month I talked about public trust being eroded by social conventions that permit (even applaud) the systematic practice of lying in public.

This month, let's discuss the lack of cultural value invested in "fairness." ...

This is a common flawed ethical stance.

A belief in the right to equality has nothing to do with Japan's future, right is right, wrong is wrong, perceived benefits or penalties are not relevant. The true test of ones commitment to an ethical position is whether you maintain it even when it acts against your interests.

Right, and went on to say that's why we couldn't blame them on the same level as the Germans who were adults and should have known better.

Mmm, wouldn't agree with that part, even children need to be accountable for their actions....but I'd venture to say they're still only 13 or 14 now...I guess some progress is better than none.

1st one was a darts bar. 2nd one was a legit run down bar (the beer was 160 yen!)

Don't care about the sign or not being allowed in. Just wanted my friend to at least acknowledge it. Even a simple "yes it sucks" would have sufficed.

I agree. But I have very few (ok only two) male Japanese friends who are worth hanging out with.

I've never seen a source for MacArthur saying the words "a nation of 12-year olds." I've heard several versions supposedly said to a variety of people, who change with the wind. One version I heard is that he answered a question about relations with Japanese government people by his replacement in Japan with the idea that if he spoke to everyone as if they were 12 years old, he would get along fine.

That's not the same as saying it's a nation of 12 year olds.

Another time was in Washington DC when he was comparing the relative advancement of developed countries (at that time) and he said something to the effect that the modernization of the country was like a 12 year old compared to a 45 year old.

That too, was not the same as saying it's a nation of 12 year olds.
