It is the only member of Apple computing product line not based on a G4-class CPU or above. Dropping back to 500MHz may seem as a retrograde step. While the G4 is faster than a G3, clock for clock, it's unlikely that a 500MHz G4 will match a 900MHz G3.

Going from a 900Mhz G3 to a 500Mhz G4 would be a massive mistake. Tech people know the G4 is faster (clock for clock), but nobody is going to think it's almost twice as fast, clock for clock. Those numbers don't make any sense.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did update the iBook to some flavor of G4, but it won't - it can't - be slower then the current G3. I think they'd have to go to at least a 700Mhz G4 to get people to go for it.

What is interesting is that my wife's 400MHz TiBook plays DivXs better than my friend's 800 MHz iBook.

..but, the iBook plays Neverwinter Nights FAR better than the TiBook, which is logical since the iBook has a far better video card.

On raw performance, I really can't say that the iBook is faster than my wife's Rev. A TiBook.
