Going from a 900Mhz G3 to a 500Mhz G4 would be a massive mistake. Tech people know the G4 is faster (clock for clock), but nobody is going to think it's almost twice as fast, clock for clock. Those numbers don't make any sense.
I wouldn't be surprised if they did update the iBook to some flavor of G4, but it won't - it can't - be slower then the current G3. I think they'd have to go to at least a 700Mhz G4 to get people to go for it.
