Rather than mini-escalators, it's these marvels of Japanese engineering that need to be "celebrated."

The wheelchair lifts are NEVER even are turned on. When encountering one you have to locate the stationmaster and then wait 20-40 minutes for them to find the key and figure out how to turn in on. Phoning ahead helps, but 50% of the lifts are broken. Can you image how many station employees and how long it takes to carry 110kg gaijin up or down the stairs? They have to call the fire department.![]()
The funniest major stations are Shin-Yokohama's Shinkansen platform (that required two fire and rescue squads and 1.5 hours) and Shibuya's Ginza Line (after waiting an hour, I crawled up the stairs on my belly like an alligator and a random 70+ year old lady pulled my empty wheelchair up for me).![]()

Wait, they don't do systematic test runs of all those equipements at the opening time ?

Yoyogi JR has one of those too. It is so stooopid. There are 4 or 5 stairs and there is a mini escalator (up only) and an elevator that also goes down into the Oedo line - just one floor up from Hades.
They should have just put a ramp there and saved the cash for the stoopid one way mini escalator. Plenty of space there for a ramp. The elevator takes FOREVER for these 5 steps as every OL is waiting to use it to get down to the Oedo line to avoid the stairs.

I know the one you mean, while waiting for someone once I came to the conclusion there wasn't enough space for a ramp which would conform to whatever steepness-of-ramp regulations there might be. Might be wrong though, TIJ and all that.

I THINK there is plenty of room in front and behind it to make a ramp that would meet steepness standards. Even if there weren't, there is on the the other side where the stairs are. (still cheaper and better than the retarded elevator)

Cradle board...the real ones back in the day were lined with leaves (waterproofing) and stuffed with fluffed juniper bark (diaper with natural oils that prevent diaper rash)

I remember seeing a photo of a kid in one of these strapped to the side of a horse that the Mum was riding. I thought it was awesome.
I used to swaddle my kid when he was little. He seemed to find it comforting.
I have tried to google the image many times but I can't find it.

That loop above the head ain't for looks, besides proving a frame for shading the baby from the scorching sun, it doubles as sort of a roll cage in case the baby is dropped, thrown from a horse, etc.

The design is simply brilliant.

Haha, more than likely someone at JR got a kickback from the elevator manufactureI'll take a pic next time I'm at baba.
