I don't know if it's true or not. Reading up quickly, I see that dehumidify mode causes the compressor to cycle more frequently than in cooling mode. Perhaps high surge current at repeated start up may negatively affect economy to the point you would be better off just using it in cooling mode and be done with it?
Dehumidify mode is recommended when you are happy with the temperature but just need the humidity pulled down to be comfortable. It should use less power than full on cooling because the compressor doesn't need to run in long bursts.
