Give credit where credit is due: they are managing to release in Japan only five weeks after world premiere, and a month after US release. What that means in terms of subtitle quality will be interesting to see.

I am told that it is better than expected: I am no fan of Mr Cruise, and neither is my informant, but he said that even though you start watching the movie wanting to wring Tom's neck, by the end of it you are hoping that he makes it to victory (My informant said "rooting for him" but I managed to stiffle a snort).

I haven't watched it yet but plan to as it does look good...so far just the usual pet peeve Wasei Eigo title on repeat is getting annoying. Clueless designers/marketers are bad enough but a fucking author going the extra mile stumbling with a title in a language they suck in is just inexcusable.

I've come to the conclusion that it's just a behaviour to make it theirs. The same way a dog piss all over the carpet to claim their territory, they shit all over the IP...
It's matching with their over enthusiastic and pride when a movie happen in Japan or when the actors make their contractual promotion trips/events (after all, never refuse a free meal...)
Usually it reach comical level of contrast with the french reception, which I can guess from here:
-another american 'blockbuster' where you won't catch a headache with the dialogue but bring earplugs for the explosions that are much more frequent.
-the protagonist role, held by the member of the illegal cult called "church of scientology" is playing the same character as in few previous movies, that you should not have seen if you are a good comie card carrying French.
-Insulting for the memory of the fallen soldier exploitation of the battle of Verdun (doing this, for the 100 years of the start of WWI is a bit... unsafe...)
usually it reaches a good level of derp that prevent to distinguish real american turds from those that are just guilty pleasures...

At home I have a special level of derp for most japanese movies I watch (from Crazy lips to Gamera/Godzilla)
"unbelivable that famous japanese actors are in a kid/weird movie."
Which raise several questions from me:
-Wait, those guys are professionnal actors ?
-since when making a kid movie justify just smearing shit on the screen and expecting the kids to enjoy ? Tried to watch a pixar movie with your brain on ?
-does your country even make good movies ? you're even worse at this than you are at running powerplants...

Then there's her TV show... where the only actor able to play properly is the police dog, everyone else doing an accidental parody of the behaviour of someone taking himself way too seriously portraying any kind of various character in 2 or 3 only possible ways: the pompous "i'm so fucking smart" villain, the pompour "i'm so fucking even smarter" cop, and the "look at me I'm fucking clueless but surrounded by so much non sequitur that I solve everything" sidekick/kid... That makes their travlog/cooking shows nearly entertaining, well... not for me since they remind me chimps at the zoo flinging their shit around to get their point accross (the chimps makes less noise and more sense though) and I still have my undelt with monkey phobia...

One thing that got old quite fast is despite the fact that she listen to this clusterfuck of bestiary non stop at full blast, she complain of any louder than whisper sound in any other movie. The "one shit too many" moment was during the "nuclear scam" scene in Hunt for Red October when the Reuben James manage to reach the Red Oktober forcing Ramius to evacuate the ship's crew and claim to scuttle it to escape having it captured by the US Navy. The soundtrack raise a little with the intensity of the moment... Which was judged "too loud"... and ended up in a "go fuck yourself, switch to TV there's certainly assholes eating ramen and shouting OISHIII, it's soo much better anyway"

(length of rant proportional to how I enjoyed my weekend...)

TL/DR:
Japan sux
Tom Cruise keeps playing the same character in every pair of movies (Top Gun / Days of Thunder)
This planet sux
Marion Marechal nous voila !

Verdun

ni oubli ni pardon

never forgive never forget/ for you illiterate kapitalist pigs

I'm still trying to figure this out:

In the Cast:

Masayoshi Haneda - "Takeda" (Picture is missing)

I don't think there are any Japs in the entire movie?? Is his name just on there to draw Japanese to the theatres or is there a special Jap-only cut where they throw him into some scenes??

That's what everyone seems to be saying. I think I'll wait for it to come out on DVD though.

Just because something sounds retarded to our ears doesn't mean it won't work in Japan. These Engrish titles are made to appeal to Japanese audiences so what we think is largely irrelevant. I have a sneaking suspicion that a long clumsy title like this isn't as effective as the distributors think. However, entertainment industry marketing in Japan isn't my area of expertise and somehow I doubt it's yours either.

No doubt slapping English/French looking words/phrasing on shit here is almost like a requirement in marketing anything in Japan....but in this case, apparently the original written work that this movie was based on is actually called "All you need is kill" ....so for once it's not the marketers fault. (silly me for holding an author to a higher standard than marketers) I guess it's just even more annoying that it's painfully obvious where the phrase in this title was bastardized from...

Either way, what I said applies. Also, the publishers could have been the ones who came up with the title in consultation with their marketing team.

That's pretty much the conclusion I have come to as well. I saw an online ad for this movie a few days ago and for a second I was like, WTF? Did Cruise release a new sci-fi movie besides Edge of Tomorrow?

For those who may not know, All you Need is Kill is the actual name of the Japanese novel the movie is based on, written by a Japanese author (with the Engrish title).

I can remember renting videos here in the 90's and having to describe movies (story & actors, etc.) to the clerks as the title was quite often not just katakanacized in Japanese (ex. 氷の微笑 - hint, not called Ice Smile in English).
