2014 and Japanese input bullshit

Postby chibaka » Wed Jul 16, 2014 6:28 pm

I know this crap has been around for years, but surely Japan can get around this input nonsense in this millennium?
For the fucking life of me I can't get this fucking site to accept anything, hiragana, katakana, romaji or fucking hieroglyphics. Going to get some beer before my laptop gets thrown through the window...
Any ideas?

Do you have a yokobo 「ー」 in your name that you are trying to input? I am often microaggressed virtually for that reason, as a pure Yamato will not be expected to have a yokobo in their furigana. Just fudge with an duplicate vowel.

Sometimes there are also those fields in which you have to enter your name as kanji. No way it accepts input of kana or romaji. I usually input the name 漢字無 in addition to my kana name in the kana field.

That usually works, and the human at the other end of the pipeline figures out what is going on.

Quite often I've been able to trick the "kanji-only" fields by entering my name in double-width romaji - my guess is that sites often explicitly reject half-width and kana, and let everything else through.

Oh, that's new to me.

Gonna try that next time!

Or a smaller vowel...that's how I registered my shit. You already know I'm crazy but I just couldn't accept having punctuation used as a character in my name. (As Wags just pointed out, you won't find any Japanese with it like that)

Example:

Jane Doe => ジェイン・ドォ

none of this ジェーン・ドー shit

Problem is, I would pronounce ジェイン・ドォ as Jane Doe...

So what is the logic behind this 「-」 issue?
The second on the list was the only one that was accepted, I never did understand this problem, haven't encountered it for a while, obviously etours is behind the times I.T. wise......

So what was the issue? You were trying to insert a dash-like character in a ?? field and it was rejected?

Are you sure about that? There are some Japanese people whose names are written in kana. I know an あさ美 (Asami) and met a guy whose family name is 二ツ森 (Futatsumori).

I have had the issue of not being able to enter a "ー" before though. That was an online application for a credit card. Must have been an anti FG conspiracy.

Yes, my name along with many FG has a 「-」in it. When I typed my name using hiragana as normal, it wasn't accepted. I had to select the "correct" dash, in this case the ( - [半]ハイフン、マイナス ). The other characters in my name were unaffected.
When typing normally, it would use one of the [全] type dash characters.

Edit: For example, Mark would normally be typed 「まーく」 but the 「ー」would be rejected. Change it to 「ま-く」 and it works.

That sounds even weirder since you'd expect the full ー and not the half - to be accepted in those fields. (since the kanji/kana are also 全 chacaters, no?) Unless they really were trying to keep out ー and simply forgot to reject - Either way, I've come across many o forms that won't accept the 伸ばす "-" in any form and you would have to enter "poo" as プウ rather than プー

I don't remember checking combinations of Kanji and Kana, but I suspect those web pages would not take any strings containing Kana. Recently, this problem seems to have become less common. Maybe they finally figured out that foreigners, あさ美さん, and 二ツ森さん can also be good customers...

It sounds to me like whoever designed the site accidentally allowed the wrong nobasu.
