There must be a joke somewhere...

It seems to me that these sort of vindicative prosecutions are being ramped up, but I predict the case will collapse on appeal.

I just read this, and found it electrifying news that could well transform the current climate of resignation and resentful acceptance. By charging these men it could help to keep the question of responsibility and liability current, even though there is sure to be increased resistance from the authorities. I only hope the prosecutions case is well grounded and has sufficient power to avoid a meltdown under cross examination by the defence counsel. One article even suggested that the proceedings could result in shocking revelations about the disaster, which could lead to increased polarisation on the issue, but I think for the most it is a positive step.

I think you've penetrated the core of the matter - let's just hope it doesn't unleash a tsunami of runaway chain reactions.

You may not see potential in any of Kurogane's comments, but you should not water them down. It's not like he's out of batteries yet, so even if you can't feel the sparks yet, I advise you to stay fired up for a while.

Not sure if he has the capacitor for that. Hope he doesn't blow a fuse.

You gotta love this country

Mr Kan admitted he was frightened and said he got “no clear information” out of Tepco, the plant’s operator. He was “very shocked” by the performance of Nobuaki Terasaka, his own government’s key nuclear safety adviser. “We questioned him and he was unable to give clear responses,” he said.
“We asked him – do you know anything about nuclear issues? And he said no, I majored in economics.”

I quite like Kan-san. When the knives came out for him I knew the real crisis was over.

And this one is also interesting...

Total disaster was averted when seawater was pumped into the reactors, but the plant manager, Masao Yoshida, later said he considered committing hara-kiri, ritual suicide, in despair at the situation.

This documentary (the last third) covers seawater refilling the spent pools just in time with some real and very dramatic footage. A small group of very very brave and totally selfless Tokyo firemen saved the day. And yes, it was a very very close run thing and Tokyo would have been in the firing line had they not managed to get radiation levels down enough to work on getting the damn thing under some semblance of control.

I was miles away from it but was scared near shitless. It was obvious that they didn't know what they were doing for the first 4 or 5 days.

Yep, here in Japan the economists are in charge of the nuke plants and the nuclear engineers are in charge of the economy. Works great, so to say...

Yeah....and the only one with a relevant degree was stuck serving tea and snacks...and was told to flee the plant with the rest of the staff.

I'm not exactly sure that even today they have the start of a clue about what they are doing...

But on soylent news there's still people saying that the probability of a tsunami higher than the protection wall was too low to justify the cost of an upgrade... Despite the june 2009 report saying it might be more likely than previously thought, happened before and the fact that it just happenned... Again...

Seems that excell spreadsheets are the worst gateway drug evur... To a comical level when you read the records for tsunamis in Sanriku:

In the last 5 years have you seen or heard of any attempts by external parties to obfuscate data or otherwise hinder the release of information?
Any other curious things to note?

Early after the accident, I did have a Japanese co-author who worked at a government lab who had to remove his name from a scientific paper, as we were trying to compare Fukushima to Chernobyl. In other cases, I’ve had great and open interactions with several Japanese scientists working at their Universities and others in the national labs of Japan.

They didn't even bother to hold the fifth year ceremony mourning the disaster in Tohoku. Quite the middle finger from the LDP. Keep the focus on Tokyo, and 2020. Fuck the provinces.

It's just that Abe could have faked caring by attending a ceremony in one of the disaster-hit areas, rather than at some gala event in Tokyo, not that Tohoku didn't have any ceremonies of their own. I guess he's too busy with the latest Olympic flame cauldron crisis to travel.
