Was on the Yamanote line and talking (quietly) in English to another FG and showing him something neat on my keitai.. a site, Tabemo, to which I was introduced the other day.
There we were, standing in the aisle of a fairly crowded train where there were many other people also quietly chatting, and a very strange woman, who was standing behind me with her back facing my back, starting speaking loudly in English..
"This is Japan, you should be speaking in Japanese!!!"
Taken somewhat aback, I turned around and she repeated herself to no-body in particular as she hadn't bothered to turn around. I asked the back of her head quietly in Japanese, "Excuse me. What is the problem?"
She refused to talk directly to me, but then started saying something about a political national party (missed the name) and then there was lots of "Tut, tutting". Again I asked her what her the nature of her outburst, and she again refused to look at me or reply to my rather polite inquiry.
Then it was obvious that this xenophobe had a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock, so my friend and I turned back to our conversation with a few nervous, "Right then, well, as I was saying..."
I looked around at a few of the other passengers who rolled their eyes and smiled sympathetically at us so we were not the only ones who thought her a tad loopy.
Somebody a few people away started to snicker..
This wierdo started up again with "Tut Tut"s and "Go ahead, laugh..."
WTF???

What is one supposed to do in such situations???
