Worse heat than '95?

Postby mr. sparkle » Thu Jul 15, 2004 10:03 am

On my first visit to Tokyo it was the hottest weather on record in, like, 75 years.

Got a keitiei email from Galpal Miss Yamazaki today. She says to "Prease Postpone Trippu - worse heat than when you first came to Japan".

The heat is really gnarley in Tokyo in the Summer, no doubt. But is the weather this year hotter than the "blast furnace" 'o '95 in the big T? Today it says 88 (31C) degrees F at 80% humidity. I hear it's hitting 95F/35C from time to time too. Doesn't sound too bad, but with all that humidity? OUCH. I believe the record is 38C.

Props to whoever can handle it. I can't - I scurry from AC to AC and don't like to go out in the middle of the day. Same rule in BKK.

I remember the advice I got from some Japanese last time to NOT drink so much water in the heat. It keeps you cooler. Whatever!

Any wardrobe or keepin' cool hints most welcome. I'm gonna sweat bullets and be beet red regardless, but I need to minimize that if possible. Maybe I'll get that linen suit? :)

Weather forcast for August? HOT and HOTTER - I guess, no?

Check back with who ever told you that and see if they are still alive :D

Drink plenty of water through the day.

Any wardrobe or keepin' cool hints most welcome

Personally I favour the cool summer Jinbei. Very light and airy.

However if your feeling very hot!

Go native with a Fundoshi- always very cool

Thoughtful Miss Yamazaki---a dead sweaty gaijin is no fun.

Next August will be the WORST Japanese weather on record. Do like the Pongi and only go out at night.

Yeah, I remember that, I was staying in Tokyo for a few days in August 96 when the record was broken and it hit 38C (actually, 38.5 IIRC). Honestly, it was not that bad, except that I had just dyed my hair a weird color, and I had to keep a towel around my neck to sop up the melting hair dye.

Now honestly, 100 degrees F is NOT all that horrible, not even with the humidity. It seems downright temperate considering that I'm used to living in climates where it gets up to 104F routinely each summer. Just consider the high temps as an unlimited excuse to move more slowly, work less, and drink more beer.

Supposed to be 34 today and was 35 two days ago.. It's hot, but you get used to it. Nakedness at home helps.. Actually, if you work inside, it's usually fucking freezing in the offices; Japan doesn't seem to how to use thermostats.

Oh you pansies (grew up in a place where it quite often hit above 40 degrees celsius).

We don't even have an aircon in my apartment now - just a fan and a cool breeze coming off the mountain.

I have to take a jacket with me everywhere because I get too cold on the train and in offices.

Drink lots of water, carry a towel, triackle water over your wrists to cool down. And try not to be running around too much in the afternoons.

http://www.uchimizu.jp/2003/body_english.html
Let's UCHIMIZU to cool down Tokyo's blasting summer heat!
A water expert stated that the temperature of Tokyo would be lowered 2 degrees if a million people watered the sidewalks and streets of Tokyo at the same time.
"We Japanease had a custom of sprinking water, with a ladle, on streets and in gardens, at house entrances, in front of shops to keep the dust down and ease down the heat, especially in the very hot summer time"

Well from where I am from, there would be a moonscape and society similar to Tank Girl if people started to waste water in such a silly manner.

Honestly, does Kanto need more humidity? (which would be the result of everybody trying to get their concrete to grow)

It really is hot as hell these days in the big T. The worst for me is the morning commute in the subways. I don't live too far from work, but by the time I get there after climbing up & down subway stairs, I'm soaking wet. Then I sit shivering in subarctic air conditioning for the rest of the day.

NOT drink so much water

You much be joking. Drink a little often. It's the only way to stay alive.

With advise like that, no wonder people die here when the temp goes over 35. I'd hate to think what would happen if a Sydney like heat wave came thru. 42C and has been know to go to 45C.

Outback it is that every day and schools don't close until it gets over 47C.

if the expert were such an freaking expert why didn't he/she tell us how much each person needed to water the concrete? a spoonful each or turn on my waterhose until winter?! jeez! i wanna help. i really really do. there are "experts" like this all over the planet and it's all boulderdash !!! statements, polls - manure, i tell ya. manure.

if the whole nation turns on their air-con , which they are doing it will certainly raise the temperature. not good at all for the enviroment or your bodies. get your employers and offices to get those things off or lowered.

Yes, wearing more clothing can actually keep you cooler. Check out those camel riding cats out in the dessert: covered head to toe.

Anyhoo...my strategy for keeping cool in Tokyo was to have one of those backpacks that also converts into a briefcase looking thing. They have a "pocket" like structure into which one can slip the backpack straps when not in use, hiding them from view, and making the bag appear more professional. Well, when using the backpack straps, this "pocket" area is empty and rests on one's back. Stick one of those refreezable ice pack things into this pocket area and you are ready to chill. Shirt stays dry, blood is cooled, and all is forgiven.

Well, since they practically live at the office from sun-up to sun-down, and the AC's are set to sub-arctic temperatures, I can understand why; if they wore sandals, shorts, and a fu-man-chu, not only would they catch a cold every week, they'd also be considered idiotic dipshit losers by the 'millions' of other corporate cocksuckers..

I don't understand the suit-coat, but the undershirt isn't so bad; I can wear my dress shirt multiple times before it's dry cleaned, and it's really not that hot.

The finest in "cocksucker" wear:

Cool business suits beating summer heat
Yomiuri Shimbun

Business suits and shirts that breathe and repel the solar heat in summer are gaining popularity among company employees.

Makers of menswear are exercising their ingenuity by designing suits that include features such as sunlight reflection and better ventilation to improve comfort during the stifling summer months.
