PC memory upgrade...usb hard discs any good?

well the ol PC is a bit old now, running XP pro, but with all the games I`ve bought, and other junk taking up space i need more memory...HD type...I heard you can buy HD drives using a usb connection....could be good as i may be able to use it with another PC when i buy one
anyone know of these..or should I put another Disc internal?

Depends on if your Motherboard USB is 1.1 or 2.0. If it is the former, get an internal drive, if it is the later, then why not? You can use it anywhere and it is portable.
You could add a USB 2.0 or even a combo USB 2.0 and Firewire 800 PCI card to the computer..
I would say if you want ultra portability and you cherish quietness to get a laptop HDD and a laptop USB case enclosure. There is usually no external power supply need it runs of the USB power. And there are not internal fans. Quiet as a mouse.
I have a 3.5" HDD enclosure and a 200GB HDD, it has external power, and an internal fan.. it sounds like an Apache attack helicopter.
Just some advice.

I'm fully aware of the size limitations on laptop drives - I removed the 40GB HD on my laptop the first night I brought it home and put in an 80GB HD.
But the external 20GB drive (the small kind, laptop type) I referred to was from the start intended purely for portability when taking data to/from work. The drive was never intended for use in a laptop, and 4-5 years ago when I bought it, it far outdid flash memory in terms of size and was small enough to fit in a jacket pocket.

I mainly need reliable storage space, more size is an acceptable sacrifice for portablity...BB those links looked interesting. thanks.

If size is all that matters, and your motherboard doesn't support SATA (serial ATA), then I'd get this ATA IDE drive:
250GB IDE HDD
It's the best bang for the buck in my opinion. 7200RPM, 8MB cache, 8.9ms seek time and 250GB of storage space.
Install it as a slave drive in your system.
They make a larger 300GB drive but it's $50 more and runs at 5400RPM which is slower than 7200rpm which in turn tacks on 1.1 more ms of seek time.
300GB model
I'd get the largest and fastest drive you can afford. If your mobo supported SATA, I would even suggest a WD Raptor 10,000RPM model, which is quite suited for gaming.
Flash memory can be used for all sorts of things. It is typically more expensive byte for byte than a hard disk storage solution.
And commercial products AFAIK go up to 4GB at the moment. But at $600 for 4GB of storage it is quite expensive:

Flash memory is usually in a stick or cartridge form. It is used for file transfers mainly like from a digital device to a PC.
