Please pardon my complete lack of train-knowledge and y'know... my lack of playing that train-conductor game at the local arcades but HOW on earth would you 'control' the train once it derails? lol!

All trains put on the brakes when an M5 or more shakes up the place. Its automatic.

There's about one Mag-1.5 or higher quake every 40 minutes---there was a Japanese Mag-4.5 at 10am up there Nigata.

It's currently 12:04am and I've been feeling the odd shake now and again. Can someone else verify this? I've just been sitting here and my desk wobbled a little bit. I assume it is an after-shock of sorts since there are no roads large enough for a heavy truck to drive down close to my home.

Postby Mini_B » Mon Oct 25, 2004 1:37 am

This is really #$%^&* up man. I'm watching TV and there's a little beep every five minutes saying there's been another quake. I'm in Tokyo on the 5th floor of a 13 story building. I don't think the duck and cover technique is gonna work under these circumstances. We've felt a couple shakes...but nothing major yet. One big one lastnight though.

Man, I was inside Tokyo Dome at 6PM Saturday night when the first quake hit. The lights in the ceiling were swaying so much, we were poised to run out the door. Funny thing is, it was right in the middle of a kickboxing match, and the fighters had to continue in the ring during the quake.

Mind if I ask about what time? I was laying in bed and woke up to being slightly shaken.... then I felt my heart beating fairly hard and thought it was just in my mind so I rolled back over and went to sleep.

How much longer are these little shindo 1-2 aftershocks gonna last? I heard from a roommate they would keep coming until the end of the month.

It's annoying.

Three-year-old Mayu Minagawa was swept away in a wave of boulders and earth after a 6.8-magnitude quake struck the road she was traveling on with her mother and brother on Saturday.

On Wednesday, rescuers pulled out Mayu's mother Takako and her 2-year-old brother Yuta from the van in Niigata prefecture.

Yuta survived and is now in hospital, but Takako died of her injuries.

I was watching Japanese news yesterday. they said a part of the tetonic plate has broken off and been destroyed, they said there would be regular earthquakes for a year, although not a sever as time progresses.

Anybody have any links to some scientific comments to all these earthquakes. NeoNecro?? Something similar to the tectonic plate thing you mentioned would be really interesting.

The Defense Agency has drawn up a plan to mobilize the Ground Self-Defense Force in the event of a major earthquake in southern Kanto, dispatching 19,100 troops within 24 hours of a quake and eventually about 85,000 troops, agency sources said Friday.

The mobilization plan for a southern Kanto earthquake was drawn up on the assumption that a shallow-focus earthquake registering 6.5 to 7 on the open-ended Richter scale occurring at 5 p.m. on a weekday in winter.

The quake is predicted to leave about 150,000 people dead, 200,000 people injured and damage about 3.4 million houses and buildings, chiefly in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures.

Gee, even my cat slept through that one. Are you folks sleeping on tamami? (Sleeping on the floor accentuates the feeling of an earthquake---you can actually feel the wave hit one side of your futon and move along it.)
