The Defense Agency has drawn up a plan to mobilize the Ground Self-Defense Force in the event of a major earthquake in southern Kanto, dispatching 19,100 troops within 24 hours of a quake and eventually about 85,000 troops, agency sources said Friday.
The mobilization plan for a southern Kanto earthquake was drawn up on the assumption that a shallow-focus earthquake registering 6.5 to 7 on the open-ended Richter scale occurring at 5 p.m. on a weekday in winter.
The quake is predicted to leave about 150,000 people dead, 200,000 people injured and damage about 3.4 million houses and buildings, chiefly in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures.
